Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Shedding Light on Regulations

Video of the Week

This week I spoke on the House floor about my energy bill, ?#?HR4444? the External Power Supply Improvement Act. This legislation updates current policy to match advancements made within the lighting industry. This pro-consumer, pro-manufacturing legislation will exempt certain lighting technologies from a misguided regulation issued by the Department of Energy. Click here to watch the full video.

Weekly Update
This week was off to a great start! My pro-consumer, pro-manufacturing energy bill was discussed, and passed, in the House of Representatives. This legislation updates a misguided rule previously issued by the Department of Energy (DOE). As advancements were made in the lighting industry, DOE was attempting to regulate certain energy-efficient products that were not in the marketplace at the time the rules were created.

Manufacturers and the energy-efficiency community agreed that this was a problem and creating confusion, so I proposed legislation – HR 4444. My legislation excludes certain lighting technologies from being included in this overly-broad rule.

Additionally, this week I had a chance to see several North Carolina faces in Washington. I met with the NC Sweet Potato Commission, the NC National Guard Association, and several faith-based partner organizations that focus on global nutrition programs. I also had a chance to meet with Dunn Police Officers to discuss the issues they are facing with prescription drug issues on the street.

Energy Bill – H.R. 4444

I was excited to see my bipartisan legislation pass the House of Representatives last Monday, as lighting companies provide over 3,000 jobs in North Carolina. Passage of H.R. 4444 ensures that these businesses and the jobs they provide to North Carolinians are not disrupted.

This policy provides clarity in the marketplace for manufacturers, encourages innovation within the lighting sector, and lowers energy prices for American families and businesses. It’s a win-win, and I’m grateful for the work of my colleague, Representative DeGette, and the Energy & Commerce Committee for their leadership in moving this legislation. Snapshots from Washington

I enjoyed talking with Lucy Sullivan, Executive Director of 1,000 Days, and the CEOs of partner organizations Save the Children and Bread for the World about global nutrition programs and fighting malnutrition.

I had a great meeting with members of the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission, including new Executive Director Kelly McIver, in my Washington office this week. Agriculture plays a vital role in the economy of North Carolina, and the Second District, and I am always interested in hearing the concerns of those in the industry.

Another group I met with this week was from the NC Division of Veterans Affairs State Veterans Homes Program. Veterans issues have always been a top priority for my office!

I had the honor of welcoming audience members and panel participants to a briefing hosted by Dr. Pitts and myself. The briefing was on domestic trafficking and featured testimony from survivors and doctors as to the physical and mental health issues suffered by these victims. I had an opportunity to discuss my amendment, The Trafficking Awareness Training for Health Care Act of 2015, which was signed into law last May as part of an anti-trafficking legislative package.

It was a pleasure meeting with members of the North Carolina National Guard Association. This non-profit organization supports active, separated and retired North Carolina members of the Army and National Guard.

Snapshots from the District

This week the North Carolina Zoo had its official welcoming event to celebrate the arrival of Nikita to the polar bear exhibit.

Consider a visit to the zoo for a fun, family activity this weekend!

The Kernersville VA Health Care Center ribbon-cutting ceremony took place this week. They offered tours of the new facility which will impact Randolph County veterans.

I am committed to making sure the service of each of our veterans is honored and they are treated with the respect and care they have earned.
