| Weekyly Update |
| This week I had the honor of presenting a Wake County student with an award she earned through the Congressional Award program. This program is for students ages 14-23 and involves setting various goals in areas like public service, physical fitness and personal development. Three levels of awards are available to students — gold, silver, and bronze– depending on their accomplishments within each program area.
Roxanna is a student at Southern Wake Academy and completed more than 75 hours of community service in order to receive the Bronze Medal. She has volunteered at the Kraft Family YMCA and led crafts for children at the Harris Lake County Park. Roxanna has challenged herself physically, as well – working hard to earn a yellow belt and leading a 5-day canoeing trip in Canada! We are fortunate that our future is in the hands of focused, highly motivated and goal-oriented young adults like Roxanna. Also this week, I had a chance to surprise a 4th-grade student named Owen with his school project. Scroll down to see what I sent Owen for help with his assignment!

| Working with 2nd District Students: |
Owen, a fourth grade student in Arkansas, wrote to me asking for help with his school project on North Carolina.
I responded to his letter and sent this package of North Carolina items and information to him! Good luck on your project and thanks for your interest in our state, Owen!
This is one of two Congressional Award Bronze Medals that has been given out by our office this year. It is an amazing tribute to their determination as well as a great honor for me to present them their medals.
Pictured above is Roxanna with her family. I am happy that they could make it to my Dunn office to take part in the celebration on Tuesday. |
| Congressional Art Competition |
Congratulations to Shannon Kelly of Green Hope High School — our 2016 Congressional Art Competition winner. Her work titled “Playground” uses graphite to portray a distance piece of a child’s playset. I look forward to meeting Shannon and seeing her work in the Capitol! Now that the official voting has taken place, I want to open up the floor for everyone to have a say in our “People’s Choice” winner. All of our submissions have been posted in an album on my Facebook page. Click here to view all of the entries and cast your vote by clicking “like” on your favorite photo/photos to give them a chance to win an American Flag flown over our Nation’s Capital. Voting ends on May 12th. |
