WHAT CAN YOU SPRAY FOR WEEDS IN FLOWER BEDS?
Very little. There is no getting around hand weeding in flower beds, but if you do it regularly it’s easy to keep it from getting out of hand. I recommend budgeting about 5 minutes per bed per week. Pre-emergent herbicides can help some, but must be applied to a weed-free bed and watered in (read the label to make sure it’s safe on the flowers you are growing). Don’t forget the mulch, a three-inch layer will cut down on weeds and conserve moisture. Grass control herbicides may be an option if you have crabgrass or bermudagrass. And if you are careful, you can make directed sprays with broad-spectrum herbicides, but keep the spray off your flowers (try using a sheet of cardboard as a shield, or tape a 2-liter soda bottle with the bottom cut out to your sprayer wand). If you do use a herbicide read the instructions because it can save you a lot of headaches.

Farming is a dangerous occupation, and we have already had at least two incidents this year involving NC farmers. Please remember to put safety first, for yourself and for your family. Give me a call to schedule a complimentary safety review of your farm (252-213-6095).
