Vance animal shelter hours change

The Vance County Board of Commissioners acted on Monday during their regular meeting to extend the weekly public access times to the Vance County Animal Shelter from eleven hours per week to twelve.

County Manager Jerry Ayscue explained to board members that state statutes require that the public have at least twelve hours of access per week.

Following the manager’s recommendation, hours were expanded on Mondays and Saturdays. The shelter will now be open from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

The shelter is open on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. as well.

Commission Chair Danny Wright called the state law an “unfunded mandate”.

“All this is about finding lost pets,” Ayscue said.

The motion to accept the schedule change passed without opposition.
