County commissioners will review zoning

The agenda for the Vance County Board of Commissioners looks to be a busy one today.

As a first order of business, the board will meet as a composite board to reappoint the chair and two members to the Vance County ABC Board. Henrietta C. Clark currently serves as the chair and has requested reappointment. Also requesting reappointment are Nancy F. Wilson and John E. Fogg.

Members of the ABC Board serve a three-year term.

Commissioners will then here from J.H. Daniels of the Citizens’ Advisory Committee and Ken Krulik, head of county Planning and Development regarding the Zoning Ordinance. The Citizens’ Advisory Committee recently completed revisions to the ordinance.

The board will also hear from Vincent Jefferson of the Appearance Commission regarding solid waste matters. Jefferson plans to request that the board consider providing a solid waste manager position.

Also on the agenda:

* County Manger Jerry Ayscue will request that five vacant county positions be filled.

* Ayscue will recommend that the board receive the Jail Inspection Report of June 8, 2006 done by the NC Division of Facility Services, Jail, and Detention Section. The inspection found deficiencies in several areas and requires written responses.

* Members of the Tourism Development Authority have expressed concerns about the performance evaluation process for staff. TDA Chairman Tommy Hester requested that the matter be brought to the attention of the board. Ayscue will recommend that the matter be referred to the General Government Committee for clarification.

* Commissioner Deborah Brown has requested that the county and volunteer fire departments take steps necessary to improve the county’s insurance classification for their respective fire districts. Ayscue will recommend that the Public Safety Committee, County Manager, Fire and Ambulance Chief, and other appropriate staff work with the volunteer fire department chiefs in that regard.
