City one step closer to UV system for water plant

The city of Henderson has been working for the past several years to provide funding for the replacement of the Henderson Water Reclamation Facility’s “Ultraviolet Disinfection System (UV).

The replacement of this key component is critical to maintaining plant efficiency and compliance.

In 2008 the City of Henderson (city) was awarded a $1,581,000 Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF) Grant to fund replacement of the Henderson UV system. However, due to State budget shortfalls, the grant funds were rescinded in early 2009.

North Carolina State Representative Jim Crawford called Mayor Pete O’Geary on Friday, April 30, 2010, and advised him that the city had been awarded a $500,000 grant from the NC Rural Center. The new total cost estimate for the UV System is $1,517,000. The city is now first on the list for the matching funds of $1,017,000 with the CWMTF. It is hoped that the CWMTF will have grant funds made available in the upcoming fiscal year.

Mayor O’Geary said, “The Henderson City Council and I are most appreciative of the grant award from the NC Rural Center as it is a significant step forward in reestablishing the funding for the UV system at the Water Reclamation Facility. Representative Crawford has worked very hard on the City’s behalf and we are most grateful for his assistance in securing this grant award.”
