Summer Reading Program Finale 2006

Fall Programs Kickoff

Perry Library enjoyed a wonderful Summer Reading program Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales and teen program Creature Feature.

The library signed up more teens than ever before and had the pleasure of seeing more kids complete the program than in past years. For specific numbers about Summer Reading, see our new Children & Teen web pages now active on our website www.perrylibrary.org.

Now fall programs are ready to kick off, and we hope that the kids and parents who joined us this summer will be back for more in the fall.

The NC Museum of Natural Sciences will help us kick off the fall programs with an Indoor Nature Hike this Saturday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Perry Library Meeting Room. Signup is limited to 30 participants and is available at the Children’s Help Desk in the library, or by calling the library at 438-3316 and asking for Youth Services.

The following week all year-round library programs will resume, including Time for Tots, Preschool Storytime, and Reading Bunch. Time for Tots is storytime and toy time for ages infant – three and meets every Thursday at 5 PM. This year Time for Tots will begin Thursday September 14 with a very special event sponsored by Perry Library and Franklin-Granville-Vance Partnership for Children (Smart Start): Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Through this program, now beginning its second year in Vance County, parents can sign up their infants and preschool age children and each month beginning soon after signup children will receive a free book for each child in the mail until their fifth birthdays, at no cost to the parents. Signup for this special Tots program is going on at the Children’s Help Desk now — sign up today or call the library at 438-3316 and ask for Youth Services.

Preschool Storytime and Reading Bunch will begin Wednesday, September 13 and Tuesday, September 12, respectively. Preschool Storytime meets every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. and invites kids ages three – five into the world of reading and learning to use the library through simple books, songs, and crafts. Reading Bunch is designed as a reading and learning club for middle and high school students and meets Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Brand New Programs for Parents and Caregivers

For the first time ever, Perry Library will offer three literacy workshops designed to get “Every Child Ready to Read!” These workshops are designed to support and educate the people who provide children’s earliest experiences in reading and literacy: parents and caregivers. In the upcoming months, three workshops will be held on three Saturdays at Perry Library. Each one will begin at 2:00 p.m. and each is intended for a maximum of 35 parents and caregivers (very young children are not recommended to attend, as this is a learning workshop for parents.) Signup for these workshops will begin a month before each event.

October 21, 2:00 p.m.: Early Literacy Workshop — Reading to Early Talkers: Newborns to Two-Year-Olds

November 4, 2:00 p.m.: Early Literacy Workshop — Reading to Talkers: Two- and Three-Year-Olds

December 9, 2:00 p.m.: Early Literacy Workshop — Reading to Pre-Readers: Four- and Five-Year-Olds

These workshops are sponsored by Perry Library Youth Services, the Public Library Association, and the Association of Library Service to Children. Signup for the October workshop will begin September 21; we hope many parents and caregivers will join us.
