Raleigh — U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today announced he is sponsoring an essay contest to select a high school junior from the 2nd Congressional District for nomination as a Congressional Page in the U.S. House of Representatives for spring 2007.
Juniors who live in the 2nd District who will be at least 16 years old by January 28, have at least a 3.0 academic grade point average and are U.S. citizens are invited to apply.
“Serving as a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives is a unique experience that provides students with access to the inner-workings of Congress and our democracy,” said Etheridge. “I encourage all eligible students in the Second Congressional District to take advantage of this opportunity.”
Pages are students who are hired to serve as support staff for the U.S. House of Representatives. Pages live in the House Page Residence Hall and take classes in the House Page School. Pages report to work after classes, delivering correspondence, legislative material and packages within the Capitol complex, answering phones and assisting Members of Congress. Pages in the spring term serve from January 28 to June 8.
Students who are interested in applying should write a 500-word essay entitled “Why I Would Like to Serve as a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives.” The essay, along with a short information sheet and three letters of recommendation from school officials, community or religious leaders, must be received by December 8 in Etheridge’s Raleigh Office at 225 Hillsborough Street, Suite 490, Raleigh, NC 27603. Complete details and the information sheet are available on Etheridge’s website at www.house.gov/etheridge or by calling 1-888-262-6202.
An outside panel of educators, government officials and local leaders will review the essays and select Etheridge’s nominee.
