Butterfield put on Energy and Commerce subcommittees

Washington, D.C. — Congressman G. K. Butterfield has been appointed to three subcommittees of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

“The appointments will provide many important and exciting opportunities to help North Carolina’s families and farmers,” Butterfield said.

Today, Butterfield was named to the Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection and the Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials.

Butterfield explained that as legislation is developed and works its way through the process, much of the work is done at the subcommittee level.

“The hands-on work is done at the subcommittee level so it’s significant to have a seat at the table,” Butterfield said.

Butterfield said assignment to the subcommittee dealing with energy was crucial because it allows him to continue to help address the needs of farmers throughout the district. He explained that with jurisdiction over all energy issues and the likely oversight on the upcoming Farm Bill’s alternative fuels section, he will be in a strong position to address the concerns of eastern North Carolina’s many farmers.

He said the assignment will also allow him to voice the concerns of families related to home heating costs and the price of gasoline. The subcommittee also has jurisdiction over national energy policy, energy conservation and energy regulation.

Butterfield said the other subcommittees will also provide him with the opportunity to weigh on issues related to international trade, interstate commerce, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund and environmental protection.
