Another chance to speak up

If you care about backyard garbage pickup, curbside recycling, library funding or any other budgetary matter, Monday night’s as good a time as any to let your feelings be known.

From 6 to 7 p.m., Mayor Clem Seifert will hold the regular Speak Up Henderson forum before the City Council meeting. For that hour in the council chambers at the Municipal Building, anyone may take the microphone and speak freely about the city, either to state an opinion or ask a question.

Budget matters have been the hot topic this month, but you can talk about anything.

Seifert will be in attendance, as will any City Council members and city staffers who choose to be there. As always, the mayor promises that if a question can’t be answered immediately, he will ensure that the answer is available by the next Speak Up Henderson forum.

The forums are held before each City Council meeting.

Three weeks ago, the forum started slowly, with only Raleigh lawyer Kenneth Haywood prepared to talk at 6 p.m. Speaking on behalf of a dozen and a half Henderson clients, Haywood asked for information on Henderson’s code enforcement efforts, which City Manager Eric Williams mailed out the next day.

The discussions picked up as the hour went on, including a lengthy exchange between Seifert and Terry Moore about the possible use of a renovated armory building as the home of a Boys & Girls Club.
