At Monday evening’s regular meeting of the Vance County Board of Commissioners, tax collector Sam Jones submitted a report for June of 2007.
The report, current as of June 26, indicated a collection rate of 93.25%.
Jones reported that the collection rate would be 93.40% for fiscal 2007, up from last year’s collection rate of 92.90%.
“That, I hope, is some improvement,” Jones told the Commission.
“It’s better than last year’s. We accept that,” Chair Deborah Brown told Jones.
Commissioner Dan Brummitt, referring to an item on the fourth page of Jones’ report, asked how a property had changed hands when taxes were owed on it.
Jones speculated that it could have been a cash deal between relatives. He indicated, however, that taxes follow the property rather than the owner who incurred the tax delinquency.
Commissioner Danny Wright asked if there should be a law regarding the transfer of property upon which taxes are owed. Jones agreed that there should be.
Later in the meeting, Jones was re-appointed by the Board to another two-year term as the Vance County Tax Collector.
