Land Planning discusses Land Use Plan committee

During yesterday’s meeting of the Henderson City Council’s Land Planning and Development Committee, members Lonnie Davis and chair Bobby Gupton discussed the composition of the Land Use Plan Steering Committee.

Council member Ranger Wilkerson was also present at the meeting.

A land use plan is enacted by governments as a matter of public policy which seeks to regulate the use of land mainly through the application of zoning ordinances. Its purpose is to regulate growth and ensure that land is used to the benefit of the community, keeping to health, economic, and ethical considerations.

Gupton commented that the Council does not want volunteers to serve on the steering committee, but rather desires members that the Council solicits.

At the last Henderson City Council meeting on July 9, 2007, members were asked to name potential members of the steering committee. A strong desire was expressed that members be solicited who would show up for the monthly meetings and work for the benefit of the committee.

The candidate list attempts to draw candidates for the committee from a variety of professions and knowledge bases, ranging from elected officials to a “citizen at-large”.

Gupton commented that “some members of the Council are more qualified than others”. He endorsed Henderson City Council member Elissa Yount as a resource would be heavily relied upon.

A deadline of July 19, 2007 has been set for members to submit the names of potential steering committee members.

The Land Planning and Development Committee will meet on July 24, 2007 at 8:30 a.m. to discuss the list of names it receives.
