Dr. Martin Luther King would be 84 years old today. The civil rights leader, minister, and recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize was born in 1929 and assassinated in 1968. Next Monday is a national holiday, honoring his memory and life’s work, appropriate in a month that also sees the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. America’s diverse population of some 308 million enjoys the civil rights Dr. King advocated, including 224 million whites, more than 42 million African-Americans, over 14.5 million Asians and about 3 million American Indians and Alaska natives. Just over 50 million of the U.S. population is of Hispanic origin. Profile America is in its 16th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.

In today’s paper about the fire on Pebble Hill, Fire Chief Henrich said fire fighters from Vance and Granville Counties were need to get enough water on the fire. I was driving north on NC 39 around 4:30 am when I encountered a major road block at Harris Cross Road. There were four fire trucks trying to fill up at the fire hydrant. This is the nearest hydrant to Pebble Hill some 6 miles away. As I proceed on my way I released how important it is to have a fire hydrant close to your home. In the light of another day, I wonder if the County Commissioners (aka Water Board) has any plan to tell the county residence how much water will cost? Based on average individual water needs of 1,000 – 2,000 gallons per month what will residence have to pay to cover the cost for County Wide Water? Will the monthly cost be based on real world individual water needs or some arbitrary number pulled from the air? Will the monthly cost of water encourage conservation of this limited and vital life resource? While we wait for the Commissioners to make their decision a word of thanks is due to Chief Henrich for his department’s extra efforts to suppress the fire on Pebble Hill.
