This week, the House passed the H.R. 803 the “Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills (SKILLS) Act to cut red tape and help more Americans get back to work. I discussed the SKILLS Act on several local radio shows this week and spoke in favor of the bill on the floor of the House. Below you will find a link to my speech and to additional information about the bill.
In Energy & Commerce subcommittee hearings this week, we heard testimony about the effect Obamacare has had on American jobs and health insurance premiums. Next week, a series of hearings will take place to look at how Obamacare would force new taxes and regulations on smartphone apps.
Yesterday, I participated in a Yahoo! News chat with fellow members Rep. Lynn Jenkins and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers about women and the GOP. You can view the entire session here at Yahoo! News.
Information on my upcoming “Doing Business with the Federal Government” seminar is provided in this newsletter. If you are a business owner interested in contract opportunities with the federal government, I hope you will attend.

There’s a Tax for That?

Did you know that your smartphone, tablet or mobile apps could be subject to added red tape or a new tax under Obamacare?
The Energy and Commerce Subcommittees on Communications and Technology, Health, and Oversight and Investigations will hold a series of “Health Information Technology” hearings March 19-21 to look at the regulation of medical applications on smartphones and tablets. This will focus on how this law would affect patients, physicians and what it means for the industry.

The SKILLS Act
This week, I voted for the SKILLS Act which will make our broken job training system more worker-friendly by cutting red tape and will help more Americans get back to work.
Americans are struggling to navigate through our troubled economy. Government programs and training have been set up to help guide them but have become ineffective due to a web of unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles. The federal government currently operates more than 50 different job training programs — many of which are duplicative – at a cost of $18 billion annually. These programs are failing and preventing businesses from hiring skilled workers.”
The SKILLS Act will cut through this mess and streamline it to be more productive and focus on training people for high paying, sustainable jobs. Furthermore, this bill keeps funding for job training and placement at current levels while streamlining these programs. That means more funding will go toward getting Americans back to work.”
