The Vance County Board of Commissioners adopted a charter for a new audit committee at Monday evening’s regular meeting.
An audit committee is typically charged with oversight of financial reporting and disclosure. Audit committees have become more common in municipal government of the last few years as financial oversight has become a priority.
The audit committee was suggested by the county’s auditors during the presentation of the fiscal 2007 audit. The county’s most recent audit was unqualified, the highest rating for a municipal audit.
The committee was chartered to have a total of five members. Two of the seats are slated for commissioners and three for non-commissioners.
The committee is appointed by the full board.
Commissioners Danny Wright and Dan Brummitt were appointed by the unanimous consent of the board. Vance businessman Tom Stevenson, who was present in the audience, was also appointed.
The board resolved to ask former Henderson City Council member Lynn Harper to serve on the committee along with Timothy Daye.
