VGCC requests funding for potential health building

Vance-Granville Community College President Randy Parker requested a commitment from the Vance County Board of Commissioners for funding of a potential allied health science building.

Parker made the request during Monday’s regular meeting of the Vance County Board of Commissioners.

The college recently determined that the building is its top priority.

Parker estimated the cost of operating the building at $6 per square foot per year or $240,000 per year. Vance County would be responsible for 75% of that cost ($180,000) while Granville County would be responsible for the balance under the current funding arrangement.

Parker told commissioners that future top job needs will be in the health services field.

According to the community college president, the next priority for the school is a new corporate campus. He said that since there are only two building sites left in Vance, a new location for a corporate campus will have to be identified.

The third priority for the college is a new building on the Franklin County campus. Parker gave the reason for the need as Franklin’s rapid growth.

Parker told commissioners that for the school to access legislative funds a committment is required from the county government to fund the building once it is built.

Commission Chair Danny Wright said that the board has always been supportive of the college. He then said that he would like the board’s Education Committee to look at it to answer some questions about costs.

Commissioner Dan Brummitt said that the cost “looks kind of high to start with”.

The matter was referred to the Education Committee. The members of that committee are Commissioners Deborah Brown, Brummitt, and Terry Garrison.
