Vance County Schools Educators Receive Awards


Educator AwardsVance County Schools honored local educators at its annual recognition banquet last night in the Civic Center of Vance-Granville Community College.

Approximately 200 educators, family members, local officials and community supporters attended the event during which Dr. Larry Webb of Eaton-Johnson Middle School was named the Vance County Schools’ Principal of the Year for 2013-2014, Angela Pugh of Henderson Middle School was named the Vance County Schools’ Assistant Principal of the Year for 2013-2014 and Dr. Jeff Arthurs of Northern Vance High School was named the Vance County Schools’ Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014.

The award winners are shown in the attached photo from left to right holding the plaques they were presented by Superintendent Ronald E. Gregory.

Webb, who has been the principal at Eaton-Johnson for the past seven years, earned his prestigious award after being nominated for the honor along with five outstanding colleagues. Other principals nominated included Dr. John Hargrove of Henderson Middle School, Dr. Michael Putney of Dabney Elementary School, Crystal Richardson of Clarke Elementary School, Laura Rigsbee of Aycock Elementary School, and Dr. Harold Thompson Jr. of New Hope Elementary School.

Pugh has been an assistant principal at Henderson Middle for nine years. She was joined in being nominated for the district award by two other gifted administrators. The other nominees were Donna Blakebrough, also an assistant principal at Henderson Middle School, and Kristen Boyd, assistant principal of Aycock Elementary School.

Arthurs has been a member of the faculty at Northern Vance High School for the last eight years. He is a teacher in the Career and Technical Education program teaching engineering and architecture. Arthurs also is the advisor for the Engineering Team from Northern Vance which won top honors in the statewide competition for the Prize for Innovation award through the N.C. State University Institute for Emerging Issues in February. He was selected as the district’s Teacher of the Year from an outstanding field of 16 teachers. Other nominees were Kathleen Arrington of Clarke Elementary School; Ruby Booth of Pinkston Street Elementary School; Cindy Carey of E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School; Jamie Herberger of Early College High School; David Jennings of Southern Vance High School; Danilo Morales of Western Vance High School; Jennifer Newton of L.B. Yancey Elementary School; Jessica Norwood of Zeb Vance Elementary School; Cristen Saunders of Carver Elementary School; Donna Smith of Aycock Elementary School; Laura Stewart of E.M. Rollins Elementary School; Michael West of Eaton-Johnson Middle School; Gail Wilson of Henderson Middle School; Sandra Woltz of Dabney Elementary School; and Robin Young of New Hope Elementary School.

Each of the award nominees was recognized during the banquet.

Those who won the educator awards and all of those nominated are truly shining examples of the outstanding, talented people who are a part of Vance County Schools.
