One of the nation’s enduring symbols, the Statue of Liberty, was dedicated on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor on this date in 1886. A gift from France, the statue’s full name is “Liberty Enlightening the World,” and is the work of sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. France also was the country of origin of a bit under 12,000 of the 334,000 immigrants arriving that year. The statue was the first glimpse of America for more than 20 million immigrants who came through nearby Ellis Island, chiefly from Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Poland. In 1910, the year of the greatest influx, some 15 percent of the U.S. population was foreign-born. Today, that figure is 13 percent, or around 40 million people. You can find more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at http://www.census.gov.

What a sad day when your local paper…..daily disgrace has on the front page a picture of Vance County’s 1st gay couple 2 marry in the county!!!! Do you not agree that there are more newsworthy stories in Vance?
Well….since the paper is only about 8 pages in Section A then maybe not. My g.ma who has taken the paper delivered 2 her home in henderson called me @ 6:30 & said she was so disgusted w/article that she would not be renewing her subscription.
She has received it for 40+ years…….way 2 go Daily Dispatch!!!
I could not agree with you more on this! Tell g.ma I am with her in not renewing mine either.
it is absolutely newsworthy. the paper has had pictures of old guys washing their car in the summer time on the front page, did you complain then? Congratulations to a couple in love.
Just bear in mind that most of the mainstream news media is left wing and liberal. I’m not surpised at all.
The Northern Vance Soccer team has made it to the finals and I heard that on WIZS from Coach Stepusin today. The Dispatch has done a dismal job reporting on the local schools. So. no, it is not surprising that the paper is losing subscribers for many reasons.
The Dispatch will never again be what it was.
What more do you expect from a newspaper(and I use that term very loosely) who puts the Main Story on Page 1 of today’s edition an article about 2 gay women getting married? The paper is a joke!!! They have 1 person working in the Sports Dept. and 1 Photographer. That’s it!!! I give it another 2-3 years and it will become just like the Oxford Ledger and only be published 2 days per week. It’s definitely not the same ole’ paper that the Dennis’ boys put out years ago!!!
anon3…..couple in “love”? Last time I checked my BIBLE it was Adam & Eve……not Adam & Steve!!! Find a pastor who condones the gays and I will show you a pastor who either 1.doesn’t believe the Word of God or 2.Is looking for another JOB!!!
yes, couple in love. you know, 2 people that decide to commit and dedicate to one another. Go back to the 50’s
What was once a family owned newspaper was swallowed up by a mega publishing company. Sad, but that’s been the way of the world a good while. The entire printed paper industry is in its death throes. Just like the land-line telephone and internet connections. Progress? We’ll just have to live to see.
Marriage is a union between a man and a woman. I cannot for the life of me figure out how the gay people who are considered married, decide who is the husband and who is the wife…We, as heterosexuals, call our marriage a union between a man and a woman. We know which is the man and which is the woman…The homosexual uses the heterosexual term as husband and wife, also…How can this be?
Marriage in the western world was created by the wealth class of the classical Greeks for one expressed purpose. That purpose was to give a man control and ownership of a woman in order to assure himself that her first child, preferably a male, is his son therefore the sole heir to his fortune. Three thousand years ago fidelity was not an established moray thus the use of the virginal wedding night test. The Roman’s picked up the idea of marriage and encoded inheritance rights into law. Today, marriage when striped of all the emotional, religious, and gender baggage is nothing more than a business contract between two people for the shared control of assets and the financial obligations to the off spring within the marriage.
