Traffic Stop Ends in Shooting, Suspect Shot at Officer, then Self


On January 2, 2015 at approximately 1:34 PM an officer of the Henderson Police Department Patrol (Operations) Division made a traffic stop in the area Winder Street and Harriet Street. The Henderson Police Officer was confronted by the driver who produced a handgun and fired upon the officer. The officer was not struck and returned fire.

The suspect then fled the scene on the vehicle. A second Henderson Police Department Patrol Officer that was in the area pursued the vehicle, which ended with the vehicle stopping on Boothe Avenue. The suspect exited the vehicle and began running, with the officer chasing him, on foot. This pursuit ended on Bullock Street. The pursuing officer confronted the suspect, who was still armed with a handgun. The suspect then turned gun on himself and fired, shooting himself.

The suspect was transported by EMS to the local medical center where he succumbed to the self-inflicted injury. The name of the person and the officers involved has not yet been released due to the ongoing investigation which has been initiated by the SBI. The request for and initiation of the investigation was made in accordance with the Henderson Police Department policy.
