The first state college for women was created this month in 1884 in Mississippi. Known as the Mississippi Industrial Institute and College, classes opened in the fall of the next year on the campus of a former college in Columbus. Now called the Mississippi University for Women, it has been ranked as one of the top schools in the annual list of “America’s Best Colleges.” The now coed school of some 2,400 students has a number its campus buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Across the U.S. today, there are some 19.5 million graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in colleges. Over 56 percent are women. That’s 7 percent of the female population over the age of 3. Saturday, March 14th. This is National Peanut Month — celebrating one of the nation’s favorite foods, and absolutely America’s favorite snack nut. They are enjoyed in many ways — roasted in the shell, used in salads and stir-fry recipes, in cookies and, of course, ground into peanut butter. The idea of honoring the peanut has been a monthlong observance since 1974. Americans eat an average of more than six pounds of shelled peanuts a year, about half in the form of peanut butter. Even the shells are used in such products as kitty litter, wallboard, and artificial fireplace logs. American peanuts have a global customer base. In 2013, over $540 million worth were exported; nearly 18 percent of that went to Canada, and 14½ percent to Mexico. Profile America is in its 18th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
Sunday, March 15th. This date in 1879 was a milestone in women’s history and the opportunities available to them. President Rutherford Hayes signed a congressional act “to relieve certain legal disabilities of women.” With this bill, its champion, 49-year-old Belva A. Lockwood, became the first woman to be admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, which she did the following year. Lockwood followed this advance in 1884 by becoming the first woman to mount a serious candidacy for the presidency. Lockwood was one of about 200 women lawyers in 1880, out of more than 64,000 in the nation. Today in the U.S., there are nearly 1.1 million lawyers, judges, judicial law clerks and other judicial workers, with more than 36 percent of them women. You can find more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.
What a noble gesture for the Vance County taxpayers to continueto pay Eddie Wright’s salary for being on the county commissioners….especially since he rarely(if ever) attends any of the meetings!!! If thats the best representative for Vance County……do I need to say more?
I’ll leave it at that b/c I’m sure the Black Caucus thinks he’s doing a wonderful job!!! And you wonder why people laugh when they hear Vance County? Look no further than your elected officials!!!
“……do I need to say more?” No. Next question.
Deception makes a great point about Eddie Wright. I just got a phone call from a friend who formerly lived in Henderson and is now a consultant specializing in companies who are considering relocating. His question to me was, “Is that the same Eddie Wright who claimed to be a preacher? Please tell me he is not a county commissioner. My, God, Vance County will never get any industry.”
He then went on to mention the fact that our jails are loaded with people charged with murders and are having their cases plea bargained without jury trails.
Companies do notice these things.
RR…..after speaking with some of the elders in Vance County they also brought about the fact that this was the same “community activist”/”preacher” who used to be over in the Church by North Henderson ball field. I was told that they lost the Church due to going bankrupt or either got so far behind on the taxes that a lien was taken out on the property and to their knowledge nobody has been in it since then. How many other examples do you need to get this guy out of elected office? He was(and maybe still is) a notorious tax deadbeat whose name appeared everytime your local paper listed the people who were delinquent. If Vance County’s Black Caucus supports this type of leadership…..it speaks volumes also!!!
I can only wonder as to why you would want someone of his “integrity” on any governing body when he has a history of not being able to handle his own personal finances!!! Not to mention having a VOTE on a budget!!!
our great leaders in vance county are just as great as the greatest president of all times our county is growing and the needs of the black people are being met if we vote white people in it will be another ferguson justice for trayvon i told you this was not over
Ya know, Decept, for someone who hates Vance County so much, you certainly are knowledgeable as to what’s happening here. You are either speaking to our “elders” or watching court proceedings. I don’t even need to subscribe to the Daily Dispatch because you’ll give us a synopsis. I find that curious. Are you sure that you aren’t just making all this up (i.e. lying)?
Publius…..were you sleeping during class when your teacher was discussing the USA? I understand that you are questioning my knowledge of the “goings on” in Vance County….especially since it’s SOOOO FAR from Granville Co. What’s it? A couple of miles? Sorry that I keep you informed on the “dirt” of your area but if you want to save your money on your local paper that’s up to you. I like reading the Daily Dispatch myself. Your attitude is a perfect example of why Vance County is “the way it is”…..you would rather get your “keyboard muscles” and challenge each and every post about Vance County that you don’t like…
Sorry bud…..either get over it or move up 85S about 7-10 miles…..on second thought…stay where you are. Vance County needs you…..lol.
As far as the Courts go….if you do a lil’ research you will find out that both Vance and Granville Co. are within District 9 Judicial System and Justice isn’t served in either county. That’s a fact that I’m sure you’ll argue with but I picture you as someone who would argue with a tree…..BTW…..when does the COUNTY CROOK who stole the Taxpayers money go back to Court? Not that it matters b/c it’s all a formality….rumor has it that her atty. has already been offered a plea deal……..and she won’t serve ONE DAY behind bars….like I said from DAY 1. Do enjoy the rest of your Sunday….and tell Mr. Pine and Mrs. Oak that DECEPTION says hello.
Also……I don’t remember posting that “I hated Vance County so much” as you proclaim. I simply posts things that evidently bother you in places that you don’t like to discuss. I’m sure your Doctor can prescribe something for those symptoms. Good Luck.
No, Decept, you simply imply your hatred by a weird and neurotic passive aggressness.
Aggressiveness, obviously.
Don’t use BIG words you don’t understand Publius. By the way, rumormill that runs down 85S has it that your “COUNTY CROOK” has already been offered another SWEET plea deal and is possibly going to accept. Guess what? No active Jail Time…..whodathunkit? You have to love the JUSTICE in District 9 Judicial System don’t you? Well, I guess you don’t have to love it but you do have to live with it.
I never knew being District Atty. was a passage of rights….Just heard from another elder fella that the new D.A. is former D.A. David Waters’ son…..Same elder fella was very disappointed that someone named Cindy Bostic didn’t get the job…..but that’s what happens whenever their is an election. Some win…..Some lose…..and most don’t even bother to vote unless it’s a relative or friend on the ballot.
Do enjoy your day gentle one.
If Deception is correct about our “County Crook” getting a deal from the D.A. that includes no active jail time, then every citizen of Vance County should be irate. This woman stole at least $400,000 from the taxpayers of Vance County and Mr. Waters was handed a slam dunk of a case. Why should she walk away with no jail time when bank robbers serve years behind bars?
Every citizen should be irate and are. Problem is: This is Vance County and we are suckers to not protest enmasse. She is due in court next week I believe. Let’s see if Mr. Waters will do what he promised at election time. Hope he does his job and puts this thief away.
RR…do a brief search on your computer and you will see that Reavis has no Court Date set for next week…only take you about a minute to find the site and type in last name and first initial and nothing appears. You can search by county or you can search any county in NC.
Prudence….your comment about “let’s see if Mr. Waters will don what he promised at election time” is funny also b/c one of his last clients he represented in Vance County was on a DUI Charge. If memory serves me correct that was one of his “campaigns promises” that he was going to GET TOUGH on DUI Charges. Ever heard of talking out of both sides of your mouth? He may have not ended up handling this particular DUI Defendant b/c I think they were trying to find other attorneys to take his clients so he could get out and shake hands and do what politicians do. Either way…seemed like a conflict of interest b/c here he was saying that he was going to Get Tough on DUI Offenders yet he was in Court as the atty. for a Charged DUI Defendant….SMH…Time will tell but if Reavis doesn’t get any active Jail Time, I will say what I have said all along….”TOLD YA SO”.
Do enjoy your beautiful Sunday afternoon.
our great leader is trying to negotiate with the middle east and all you repukelicans want is to bomb them the middle east will be safe with mr obamas strategy than your shoot first ask questions later philosophy justice for trayvon hands up don’t shoot black lives matter white priviledge needs to come to an end all you white racists will pay
Any experts out in HIH Land who have the scoop on the County Embezzler? So when does she go back to court? Has there been a trial of the facts surrounding the case? Has she been convicted and is now awaiting sentencing? Is the only reason she got caught because her husband blew the whistle? How much of the money has been recovered or repaid? Where is she now and isn’t she a flight risk, doesn’t she have a wad of cash hidden some where? Did she pass a lie detector test after the missing bank bag, was she given one? Is Waters prosecuting the case – if so a great opportunity to prove he works for the Vance Co citizens and not the crooks. Did she every marry Howie the ex fire chief? Aren’t the County Mgr and Finance Mgr also responsible for the stealing that went on beneath their noses and have they accepted any of the blame? This case is very troubling. I hate paying that big personal property tax bill every fall and figure a big percentage of it over the years was never missed by the County and instead went to that woman and her boyfriend, beach trips and bikinis – she was so proud to post it all on Facebook.
Dagny..you bring a freshness to what has become a very stale topic. Too many bloggers on this topic get Keyboard Muscles and forget what the topic is really about….a THIEF who STOLE money for years w/o ever being suspected…much less charged. I will tell you that you hit the nail on the head about her being “caught” had her ex-husband never brought it to Law Enforcement’s attention. The County will tell you that the new Finance Director was playing w/some numbers and ran across something that didn’t look right….I say….”Yeah,Right”.
Not one day in JAIL……per the rumormill…..and the news reporters have already said that she has been given a Plea Deal….it just didn’t say what the details of the Plea were. Time will tell b/c your elected officials won’t b/c they want to act like it never happened.
Kudos to your post…..
Deception is 100% correct about our “County Thief”. She enjoyed our money so now she needs to pay the price…at least 5 years in prison. If Mr. Waters offers her a plea deal, then he needs to be offered a deal by the voters…one and done.
Can the alleged county embezzler get a fair trial in I Vance County ? She has already tried and convicted in HIH
She is someone’s bleached blond child and will likely get her case continued until the next generation of Henderson’s most ‘educated’ judicial leaders are so thrilled by their accomplishment they won’t even remember poor Ms. Justice.
Yes she is someone’s child and someone’s mother. I agree with Elmwood. Why does she even need a trial?
