The Henderson Planning Board’s meeting Monday afternoon at 3:30 will have an immediate effect on that night’s City Council meeting.
The Planning Board is due to hold public hearings on two proposed ordinances. One is an amendment to the sign ordinance to allow municipal advertisement signs. The other is the long-debated amortization ordinance to force auto repair facilities and junkyards that were grandfathered under the zoning ordinance to comply with the zoning standards or phase out their operations.
Revisions made to the amortization proposal since Planning Director Erris Dunston joined the city government would give the targeted businesses an opportunity to keep operating. The initial proposal would have forced nonconforming businesses in residential areas to shut down within three years.
If the Planning Board votes to send the two ordinances to the City Council, the council will face requests Monday night to schedule public hearings on those matters Sept. 26.
Other items of interest on the City Council’s agenda Monday night:
– Mayor Clem Seifert will remind the council of the need to produce a name from each ward to fill the Appearance Commission vacancies.
– The mayor will update the council on the planned lobbying trip to Washington scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
– The Ferguson Group’s lobbying contract will be discussed.
– Joyce Galloway will address the council in reference to a complaint of police brutality filed with the Henderson Police Department.
– City Manager Eric Williams will present an update report on the problems of taste and smell in city water.

– The council is due to vote on awarding a service revolver and badge to Senior Police Officer William Skinner, who retired Aug. 31.
The council meeting starts at 7:30 at the Municipal Building.
