Wednesday’s open line
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Maria-Parham Emergency Room nursing staff, the respiratory therapist, the radiologists, and Dr. Joe himself for all of the excellent care I received on Saturday night/Sunday morning. I wish I could remember everyone’s name, but I was a whole lot sicker than I thought I was, and probably still am. As much as we like to poo-poo the local hospital, it’s been there for all of us, at one time or another, …

Friday’s open line
We’re fascinated by the argument that Vance County Commissioners Tim Pegram and Terry Garrison put forward yesterday that Henderson city residents must assume a greater tax burden because the city charter and city residence are entered into voluntarily. Many cities around the country understand that the services they provide support employment, and they impose a tax on suburbanites who commute into the city to work in order to support those municipal services. Should Henderson consider such a tax to support …

When does the village start parenting?
Here’s an article from a longtime reader that examines the question of when is it time for one to step in and do what one thinks is right for the sake of a child. When exactly is the time to “get involved”? Do we believe in “it takes a village”, or are we all getting too afraid to protect those who cannot protect themselves for fear of drowning in a litigious ocean?
