VGCC to hold Medical Office Administration and Medical Coding information session
Vance-Granville Community College will offer an information session for the Medical Office Administration program on Wednesday, July 27, at noon in room 4203 (Building 4) on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The Medical Office Administration curriculum prepares individuals for employment in medical and other health-care related offices. Andrew Markoch Named New Principal at Northern Vance High School
Andrew Markoch has been named as the new principal at Northern Vance High School. The Vance County Board of Education officially appointed Markoch to his new position during a special meeting Wednesday night. Markoch will join Vance County Schools after serving as an assistant principal at Wake Forest High School in Wake Forest and the principal of the school’s Ninth Grade Center. Fourteen graduate from EMT-Paramedic training at VGCC
Vance-Granville Community College honored 11 men and three women who completed the college’s year-long Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program on July 13. State Board of Education Extends Proof of Concept Study
State Board of Education members recently approved the extension of the Department of Public Instruction’s Proof of Concept Study into the 2016-17 school year. State Superintendent June Atkinson said she was pleased Board members extended the study. “Teachers want interim assessments so that they may address their students’ academic needs when it will have the most impact,” Atkinson said. “Students participating in the study scored higher than those who were not in the study, which reflects the positive benefits to …
New Simulation and Game Development courses offered by VGCC
New Simulation and Game Development courses will be offered at Vance-Granville Community College during the fall semester, which begins Aug. 15, after the college’s Board of Trustees added a two-year degree track in the growing information technology career field. VGCC previously only offered first-year courses toward a similar degree, but now the full degree is available. Vance County Schools is now accepting applications for STEM Early High School for grades 7 and 8 for the 2016-2017 school year. VGCC to offer second Enrollment Day on July 20
Vance-Granville Community College will hold the second “Enrollment Day” of the summer on Wednesday, July 20, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., at all four of its campuses. VGCC names 269 students to President’s and Dean’s Lists
Vance-Granville Community College has announced that 125 students earned President’s List and 144 students earned Dean’s List academic honors for the spring semester that ended in May. The President’s List recognizes students who achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) while carrying a “full load” (of at least 12 credit hours) in 100-level or higher curriculum courses. VGCC to receive federal grant funding for TechHire program
Vance-Granville Community College has been awarded nearly $1 million as part of a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to a consortium that involves three other North Carolina community colleges. The grant totals $4 million and will be split among VGCC, Alamance Community College, Halifax Community College and James Sprunt Community College. AVID Available in Middle Schools in 2016-2017
Local educators in middle schools have been training and preparing during the past school year to bring a special program to their students for the 2016-2017 year. In the new school year, educators at Eaton-Johnson and Henderson middle schools will offer services to their students through the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. The new Vance-Granville Community College program for incoming first-year students, “Summer Bridge,” is still accepting applications and has been rescheduled for July 18-29. The Summer Bridge program is a two-week (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) intensive series of activities designed to help new students prepare to meet the challenges of college before the fall semester begins in August. Students Complete 2016 School of Excellence
Twenty-nine rising sophomores in local high schools completed the Vance County School of Excellence program June 6-10. VGCC Golf Tournament sets new record with more than $104,000 raised
Vance-Granville Community College’s 32nd annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament, presented by Oxford-based Union Bank, hit a new record total by raising $104,160 to help fund scholarships for deserving students and support the mission of the college. That result surpassed the $100,318 generated in 2015, in what was previously the highest-grossing golf tournament in VGCC history. A new scholarship at Vance-Granville Community College will honor the memory of longtime Vance County business and community leader Sam Watkins Jr. His son, Trey Watkins of Wake Forest, recently visited VGCC to formally establish the “Sam Watkins Jr. Academic Achievement Scholarship” on behalf of himself and his wife, Sarah. VGCC students awarded Golden LEAF Scholarships
A group of 18 students from Vance-Granville Community College recently received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the North Carolina Community College System. The scholarship program, designed to help North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The scholarship can be used to assist with tuition, books, fees, supplies, transportation and childcare expenses related to attending classes during the 2015-16 academic year, and industry-recognized credential testing expenses that …

Dr. Ben F. Currin, the former president of Vance-Granville Community College, formally received the highest honor bestowed by the North Carolina Community College System, the I.E. Ready Award, at a recent ceremony.
