Hospitality industry training to be offered at VGCC Main Campus
Vance-Granville Community College is offering a pair of new training courses that introduce area residents to the hospitality and tourism industry. The one-day Guest Service Gold® course is set to be held on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in room 7136 of Building 7 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Driver’s Education Program Applications Available
Classes in the Driver’s Education Program in Vance County Schools will begin again soon. Students in grades 9-12, who have not had training in Driver’s Education, may pick up applications for the classes beginning Monday, October 12, in the main offices at Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools. Vance-Granville Community College held an “Advanced Manufacturing Day” event on Friday, Oct. 2, in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. At least 350 middle and high school students from Franklin, Vance and Warren counties, along with other members of the community, attended. Vance County Schools’ Principal of the Year
Heddie Somerville, the principal at Pinkston Street Elementary School for the past four years, has been selected as the 2015-2016 Vance County Schools’ Principal of the Year. She was chosen for the honor after interviews were conducted by a special selection committee. Mrs. Somerville is receiving the prestigious award after leading Pinkston Street Elementary to success in the 2014-2015 school year that saw students have some of the highest growth in reading and mathematics in the school district. Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer a Beekeeping course taught by Warren County farmer and VGCC graduate Mike Holland. Twenty-eight nonprofit boards submitted applications to open public charter schools in August 2017. A spreadsheet of applicants is available on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Office of Charter Schools’ website. “Charter schools provide parents with an additional public school choice so that they can determine the best fit to support their child’s learning,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson.
