Noted alumnus to speak at VGCC Graduation
Vance-Granville Community College will welcome back an alumnus, Dr. Maurice Godwin, to serve as the principal commencement speaker for graduation exercises on Friday, May 15. He is the first graduate of the college to address students receiving their curriculum degrees and diplomas, just as he received his Criminal Justice Technology degree 30 years ago. Vance County Schools Seeking Book Donations for Elementary Summer Reading
Vance County Schools is supporting our elementary schools and their students by promoting the annual “Give Five – Read Five” campaign sponsored through the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI). “Give Five – Read Five” was begun two years ago by DPI to address summer learning loss at the elementary level. VGCC Radiography student selected for national leadership program
Nicholas L. Kemp of Franklinton, a Radiography student at Vance-Granville Community College, is among 90 radiologic science students from around the country who were recently chosen to participate in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) 2015 Student Leadership Development Program. Kemp is one of two North Carolina students who were accepted into the program, and the only one from a North Carolina community college. He is also the first student ever selected from VGCC. VGCC to offer Craft Artists Entrepreneurship program at Farmers Market
Vance-Granville Community College is offering a new course designed specifically to help creative local residents with skills in arts and crafts to succeed as entrepreneurs. The “NC REAL Professional Craft Artists Entrepreneurship” program will be conducted at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market, located at 210 Southpark Drive in Henderson, on Tuesdays from 6 until 9 p.m., June 9 through July 21, 2015. Ferguson named to oversee Law Enforcement training at VGCC
A veteran of the criminal justice and education fields recently became the new leader for Vance-Granville Community College’s programs that train both beginning and experienced law enforcement officers. Andrea Ferguson, a resident of Manson, is VGCC’s new coordinator/instructor of law enforcement training, including the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program. Ferguson previously served as an instructor for the VGCC Criminal Justice Technology program, and was for three years head of that program. She has been a member of the VGCC …

Heads shaved, thousands raised for cancer research at VGCC St. Baldrick’s event
Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus hosted a St. Baldrick’s “Head-Shaving” event on March 28, raising $2,821 for children’s cancer research. Donations were made to sponsor 11 people whose heads were shaved in the Cosmetology lab on the campus. The event was organized by VGCC Human Services Technology program head/instructor Tracy Wallace of Kittrell, who became involved with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation because of his 11-year-old son, Tyler, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2010. Vance County Schools – Beta Club Inductions at Southern Vance
Southern Vance High School officials held the induction of new members of the school’s chapter of the National Beta Club in the gymnasium on April 28. Parents, family members and friends attended the event. Southern Vance Principal Stephanie Ayscue presented certificates to each of the 54 new inductees, who earned membership into the chapter based on their outstanding academic achievements. Vance County Schools – National Junior Honor Society Induction at Eaton-Johnson
There were nine students who attend Eaton-Johnson Middle School who were inducted into the school’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at a ceremony held in the school’s media center during the evening of April 28. Induction into the National Junior Honor Society is based on those students who qualify as the most outstanding academic achievers in their respective classes and who demonstrate outstanding character, behavior and responsibility. The Male Mentoring Program at Vance-Granville Community College will host a special guest speaker to provide “An Eyewitness Account of Social Justice from the 1960s to Today,” on Thursday, May 7, at 11 a.m. in the small auditorium in Building 2 on the college’s Main Campus. Eaton-Johnson Middle School will host a “Parent Night” on Tuesday, May 5, from 6 to 7 p.m. beginning in the school’s cafeteria. WARRENTON — Vance-Granville Community College has teamed with the N.C. Department of Transportation (DOT) to offer a new training opportunity at VGCC’s Warren County Campus.
