STEM Application Process Extended to March 13th, 2015
The application process for rising sixth graders to enter the STEM Early High School for the 2015-2016 school year has been extended to Friday, March 13. Applications can be found on the Vance County Schools’ website at www.vcs.k12.nc.us. Information about the STEM Early High School and the application are attached. Current fifth-grade students and/or their parents should turn in completed applications to their elementary school counselors. The counselors also have copies of the STEM applications. Oxford Preparatory School Readies for 2015/2016 Enrollment
On Saturday, March 7, 2015 Oxford Preparatory School will hold a public lottery for students who have applied for enrollment in 8th – 11th grades in the year 2015/2016. VGCC Black History Month program rescheduled for February 26th, 2015
To celebrate Black History Month, Vance-Granville Community College will hold an enlightening program focusing on local history and the arts. The program, entitled “Honoring Our Past, Understanding Our Present & Shaping Our Future,” was postponed due to the winter weather and has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m., in the small auditorium in Building 2 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Continues its Support of Louisburg College, Awarding $150,000 in Grant Funds to Benefit Women Scholars
LOUISBURG, N.C.— Louisburg College has been granted $150,000 to continue Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarships, which benefit the College’s female scholars. In accordance to the guidelines prescribed by the founder, the grantee awards institutions scholarship funding to award to Christian women who reside in one of the following southern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Artists make “joyful noise” at VGCC Black History Month Gospel Celebration
Vance-Granville Community College held a “Celebration of Gospel” on Feb. 12, in honor of Black History Month, and in the spirit of bringing together the college with the communities it serves. Parents and Education Stakeholders Invited to Give Feedback on English Language Arts and Mathematics Standards
NC public school parents and community members are invited to go online and give their feedback on the standards for English language arts and mathematics instruction for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The NC Department of Public Instruction has launched an online survey for parents and community members to provide feedback on the standards currently in place for students. VGCC offers Wire-Wrapped Jewelry class
Vance-Granville Community College will offer a two-hour class in which participants will learn techniques for crafting elegant handmade jewelry. The “Wire-Wrapped Jewelry” class is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. until noon on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. During this class, instructor Alison Beal of Wake Forest will lead participants through the process of making a total of four items: three different pairs of wire-wrapped earrings and a wire-wrapped briolette necklace. VGCC’s Hicks awarded scholarship for research program
Julie Hicks of Oxford, coordinator of institutional research at Vance-Granville Community College, recently completed a program of courses offered by the Data and Decisions Academy, which awarded her a Presidential Scholarship. Hicks was nominated for the scholarship by Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of VGCC. The Florida-based Data and Decisions Academy is a program of the Association for Institutional Research and is dedicated to building capacity in institutional research and data use at two-year colleges. VGCC schedules “Let’s Have a Tea Party”
Vance-Granville Community College will offer a course on “afternoon tea,” the tradition that is enjoying a renaissance as fine hotels, inns and tea rooms across the country give guests an opportunity to retreat from the hurried pace of their lives. Vance County Schools – Webb to Serve as Senate Page
Annabelle Webb, a junior at Northern Vance High School, will serve as a senate page next week in the N.C. General Assembly in Raleigh. She was appointed as a page by Senate President Pro Tempore Phillip Berger. She was nominated by N.C. Sen. Angela Bryant, who represents Vance County. Webb will be serving during the week of February 16-20, assisting legislators in the N.C. Senate Chambers. She is the daughter of Larry and Elaine Webb of Henderson.
“Getting Paid to Talk” is subject of new VGCC class
A new one-night class being offered at Vance-Granville Community College will introduce area residents to the growing “voice over” field. Ayscue retires after over 13 years serving VGCC students
Carolyn Ayscue of Henderson recently retired as a Financial Aid Assistant at Vance-Granville Community College. Ayscue’s colleagues held a retirement reception in her honor on Jan. 30 at the college’s Main Campus. Ayscue first joined the VGCC Financial Aid Office on Oct. 22, 2001, following many years with Harriet and Henderson Yarns. She served as the college’s Veterans Certifying Official, meaning that she had a special role in helping military veterans and eligible dependents to use the educational assistance benefits …
Cast announced for VGCC Dinner Theater production
Vance-Granville Community College has announced the cast for “Smoke on the Mountain,” which will be the college’s third annual Dinner Theater event. VGCC’s Drama and Culinary Arts departments are teaming up once again to present a delicious meal followed by an entertaining play, on the evenings of Thursday, April 30, and Friday, May 1, in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County.
