Vance County Board of Commissioners Special Meetings February 18th and 19th, 2015
The Vance County Board of Commissioners will hold special meetings as follows: Wednesday, February 18 at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. The purpose for both meetings is to enter into closed session for personnel matter.

Vance County Schools announces the launch of “Vance Mobile,” a free mobile district application that brings vital district and school information directly to smartphones and mobile devices. Jastrow honored for Leadership at VGCC
Erica Jastrow, department chair of Nursing at Vance-Granville Community College, was recently honored with the President’s Leadership Award from Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of the college. Jastrow’s honor is one of three Glen Raven Excellence in Teaching and Leadership Awards presented to VGCC employees during each academic year. Young named VGCC Dean of Arts & Sciences
Cynthia W. Young of Oxford recently became the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Vance-Granville Community College. She previously served as an instructor for VGCC’s Human Services Technology program. As Dean, Young now leads a division that supports the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement between North Carolina Community Colleges and the University of North Carolina System, guaranteeing admission to at least one of the four-year universities for students who graduate from VGCC’s College Transfer program. Golden LEAF Scholarship Programs Application Deadline March 1st, 2015
Courtesy of Commissioner Tommy Hester, a reminder of Vance County’s eligibility for local high school seniors or community college transfer students planning to attend any of the participating colleges or universities who reside in a qualifying county (Vance County included) and demonstrate financial need. High school seniors are eligible for a four-year scholarship totaling $12,000 ($3,000 a year over four years). Community college transfer students are eligible for $3,000 a year for up to 3 years. Over Two-Thirds of North Carolina Public Schools Receive C or Better on School Performance Grades for 2013-14
North Carolina’s first School Performance Grades are out, and 65.4 percent of elementary and middle schools earned a grade of C or better. For high schools, which have additional indicators of career and college readiness included in their grade, 88.8 percent earned a grade of C or better. Joshua Towne, Franchised Restaurant Operator of the Chick-fil-A in Henderson, was the guest speaker for Vance-Granville Community College’s spring convocation of faculty and staff in January. Towne has owned and operated the local Chick-fil-A since 2005 and has worked with the company for the past 20 years. He is also an alumnus of the North Carolina Community College System. Tar River Center to Focus on Oral History of School Desegreation with Funding from NC Humanities Council
LOUISBURG, N.C.—The Tar River Center for History and Culture Foundation, Inc. has received a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to undertake an oral history of school desegregation in Franklin County. Grant funds provide new robotic equipment for VGCC Mechatronics training
The Mechatronics lab on Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus continues to gain state-of-the-art equipment, purchased with grant funds. The newest addition is the MAS-200 Modular Assembly System produced by SMC International Training, a company based in Spain. After school tutoring sessions began this week for 11th-grade students at Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools to help them prepare for the administration of the ACT on March 3. Duke Energy awards $237,757 grant to Vance-Granville Community College
HENDERSON, N.C. – Duke Energy and Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) today announced a $237,757 investment from the Duke Energy Foundation to continue equipping the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Skills Center. Students in VGCC’s manufacturing-related programs will benefit from access to state-of-the-art, industrial-grade training equipment. The new grant is Duke Energy’s fourth to VGCC during the past year, following a similar $245,923 equipment grant as well as two donations to provide scholarships for students in technical programs.
