Former Harlem Globetrotter emphasizes importance of education
A Harlem Globetrotter “Legend” visited two campuses of Vance-Granville Community College on Jan. 20, and he brought with him a message: education is the only surefire path to success. Oxford Prep to Celebrate National School Choice Week with Special Event
Oxford – Oxford Preparatory School will hold a special event on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 9:00 AM to celebrate National School Choice Week, school leaders announced today. This event will feature a Business & Community Forum, that will include interactive discussion with students and parents. The event will be held at the school. Vance County Schools – Telescope Donation
Jack Abbott of Henderson and a volunteer in Vance County Schools, has donated a telescope to the STEM Early High School. Abbott is shown in the accompanying photo with the telescope when he came to the school to make the donation. The telescope will be used extensively in scientific studies by the students at the school in grades 6-8. Principal Rey Horner, along with his staff and students, were delighted to receive the very generous donation.
Union Bank partners with VGCC to present golf tournament
Union Bank is partnering with the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund to present the college’s annual golf tournament in 2015. “We are so appreciative of Union Bank’s role in the four counties served by our college, and it pleases us that the bank is partnering with us to help our students secure scholarships,” said Eddie Ferguson, director of the Endowment Fund. “This is our first presenting sponsor in the 31-year history of our tournament. The addition of college advisors to the staffs at Southern Vance and Northern Vance high schools is proving to be very beneficial to students. Through a grant program with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the schools each have a college advisor who works with students and their parents in helping them to prepare for college. VGCC schedules Portrait Painting art class
Vance-Granville Community College will offer an Art class focused on Portrait Painting on Wednesdays from 1:45 p.m. until 4:45 p.m., Feb. 5 through April 8. Classes will be held in room 5230 (Building 5) on the college’s main campus in Vance County. Vance County Schools – Make-Up Day
Vance County Schools will make up the student day missed yesterday, Wednesday, January 14, on Wednesday, January 21, originally scheduled as a teacher workday. It will be a full school day at all schools. High school students who don’t have to make up exams on Wednesday, January 21, should not attend school.
VGCC graduates 11 Law Enforcement Cadets in School’s 99th BLET Class
Eleven cadets graduated on Dec. 17, 2014, from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program at Vance-Granville Community College, in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. After passing the state certification exam, all are authorized to work in any law enforcement agency in North Carolina. Vance County Schools – Larry Webb Named Principal of Northern Vance High School
Dr. Larry Webb has been named as the new principal for Northern Vance High School, according to an announcement today by Superintendent Ronald E. Gregory. Webb has served as the principal of Eaton-Johnson Middle School for the last several years. He becomes the new principal for Northern Vance following the resignation of Dr. Michael Applewhite as principal of the school. VGCC Practical Nursing Graduates receive pins
Vance-Granville Community College honored 21 students who have completed its one-year Practical Nursing program during a pinning ceremony on Dec. 16 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. Scholarship established in memory of longtime VGCC employee Charles Brooks
A new scholarship is set to keep alive the memory of a Vance-Granville Community College staff member. Charles L. Brooks Sr. of Oxford died in 2009 at the age of 61, following a long battle with a rare form of leukemia and after many years working at the college’s South Campus. In the years since, his friends and co-workers at the college have worked to establish a scholarship in his name through the VGCC Endowment Fund. Brooks worked in the …
