St. Paul staff complete afterschool training at VGCC
Vance-Granville Community College recently partnered with Saint Paul Presbyterian Church Day Care Center in Louisburg to provide continuing education to all employees of the center’s afterschool program. The staff members included Brenda Lynch, Mary Spencer, Barbara Terrell and Keshia Thorne. Former Harlem Globetrotter to speak at two VGCC campuses
The Male Mentoring Program at Vance-Granville Community College is bringing former Harlem Globetrotter James “Twiggy” Sanders to speak to students, faculty, staff and the community. Sanders is scheduled to speak first in the multi-purpose room at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m. Then, he will speak in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County at 1 p.m. that day. First semester exams begin this Wednesday, January 7, and continue through Friday, January 16, at Northern Vance, Southern Vance and Western Vance high schools. VGCC honors retired faculty and staff
Vance-Granville Community College celebrated employees who had retired from the college — and particularly those who retired in 2014 — during the holiday social for faculty and staff, held on Dec. 18 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. The 14 graduates of the first-ever NC REAL Agricultural Entrepreneurship class at Vance-Granville Community College received certificates and heard words of encouragement from former NFL-star-turned-farmer Jason Brown on Tuesday, Dec. 16, in the college’s auditorium. “Farmers are the backbone” of the local area, our state and nation, Brown, a former center for two National Football League teams, told the graduates. “All roads lead back to the farmer,” he said, describing the rewards for being involved in agriculture. OPHS Charter Amendment To Include 8th Grade Rollout Has Been Approved
Oxford Preparatory High School’s charter amendment request to restructure the offerings of the school by adding 8th grade in 2015-2016 and 7th grade in 2016-2017 has been approved by the Office of Charter Schools, per State Board of Education policy. As a result of the charter amendment, a school name change to Oxford Preparatory School was approved as well. VGCC History Club celebrates successful Food Drive
Vance-Granville Community College’s History Club recently conducted a food drive as its major service project of the fall semester. Students collected non-perishable food items, as well as paper products and hygiene products, all of which were donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The Food Bank works with food pantries in all four of the counties in the college’s service area: Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren. The donations weighed in at 522 pounds, which translates to …

Vance-Granville Community Band kicks off holiday season with free concert
The Vance-Granville Community Band presented its seventh annual free holiday concert on Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Entitled “A Powerful Christmas Concert,” the program featured a variety of traditional holiday favorites. Carl Cantaluppi of Butner, who has played clarinet in the band for many years, spoke on behalf of the ensemble and introduced each piece. Students learn about careers at VGCC Business Technologies Fair
Vance-Granville Community College’s first-ever Business Technologies Fair brought young people to campus to learn more about careers and how to prepare for them. The event, held Nov. 12 in the VGCC Civic Center, engaged hundreds of middle and high school students from Vance, Granville and Warren counties, as well as educators from those counties and Franklin County. VGCC Radiography students provide Christmas gifts for kids
Students in the Radiography program at Vance-Granville Community College recently completed a community service project to provide a happier holiday for local children in need.
