Vance County Schools – Bus Driver Training
Vance County Schools will be hosting school bus driver training sessions Monday, October 27, through Wednesday, October 29, in the Drama Room at Southern Vance High School. Interested persons must attend the training on all three days to receive certification. Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of Vance-Granville Community College, recently presented the college’s annual awards to a pair of outstanding VGCC employees. Kathryn M. “Kathy” Ktul of Louisburg, the college’s registrar, was named Staff Member of the Year for 2014-15, while Cosmetology program head/instructor Tomeka C. Nearly Eighty Percent of Third Graders Meet Reading Proficiency Standards
Seventy-nine percent (79.2 percent or 91,919 students) of North Carolina public school third grade students met the reading proficiency standards under North Carolina’s Read to Achieve program according to the Improve K-3 Literacy Accountability Measures Comprehensive Plan for Reading Achievement report. Oxford Prep to Hold 2nd Annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser
On Saturday, October 4th Paul Smith and The Mattress Center will sponsor a fundraiser to raise money for Oxford Preparatory High School to help fund the school’s athletic program. Smith, a 2006 graduate of J.F. VGCC Warren Campus helps local kids in need
Vance-Granville Community College’s Warren County Campus recently formed a partnership with Warrenton-based nonprofit organization J-Jireh Services that has resulted in local schoolchildren receiving book bags and school supplies. NCDPI Receives 40 Applications to Open Charters in 2016
Forty nonprofit organizations have filed applications to open a public charter school in August 2016. These applications met the Sept. 26 deadline and were submitted through the automated application system utilized by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Vance-Granville Community College is offering a new course designed specifically to help local farmers and budding entrepreneurs succeed in developing profitable, environmentally-sound small farms or agricultural businesses. VGCC President creates new Scholarship
Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of Vance-Granville Community College, and her family have established a new scholarship to help students continue their education. In awarding the Keith and Stelfanie Williams Family Scholarship, preference will be given to students who first came to VGCC for an Adult High School Diploma or High School Equivalency diploma, and then enrolled in a curriculum program at the college to earn a certificate, diploma or degree. Henderson Kiwanis Club celebrates fully endowed VGCC Robert Turner Scholarship
Officials from Vance-Granville Community College were guests at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Henderson. Club members were celebrating the culmination of the process of fully endowing a scholarship at the college in memory of Robert J. Turner, a longtime member of the club. Ethel J. Hunter, a veteran member of the faculty at Eaton-Johnson Middle School, has been selected as the Teacher of the Year for Vance County Schools for 2014-2015. This is her second selection as the district’s Teacher of the Year. She was previously chosen for the honor for the 2006-2007 school year. VGCC welcomes new trustee, gets update on plans for new building
Vance-Granville Community College’s Board of Trustees welcomed Barbara Cates Harris of Oxford as its newest member and received an update on plans for its newest building on Monday, Sept. 15. District Court Judge Daniel F. Finch of Oxford, the chief district court judge for the Ninth Judicial District, swore Harris into office. She was appointed to the board by the Granville County Board of Education to take the place of former Trustee Ernest Thompson at the end of his term. …
