VGCC Culinary students and faculty play multiple roles at Hot Sauce Contest
The eighth annual North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest, held Sept. 13 in downtown Oxford, again featured the Culinary Arts department from Vance-Granville Community College. Not only did students from the program serve up their own spicy treats to festival attendees, but students and faculty members also formed the entire team of judges for the second consecutive year. VGCC announces Small Business Summit and Expo; Entrepreneur to Keynote
The Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center is planning a Small Business Summit and Expo, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce of Warren County and the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21, from 11:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m., in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County. VGCC to offer free High School Equivalency practice tests for limited time
Vance-Granville Community College will provide High School Equivalency practice tests at no cost to any local adult on weekdays between Sept. 22 and Oct. 3, 2014, as part of the national GED Testing Service’s “See for Free” program. VGCC names head of new Mechatronics program
Keith Shearon of Youngsville has been named to lead the new Mechatronics Engineering Technology program at Vance-Granville Community College. Shearon brings decades of industry experience in manufacturing and electronics to the program and his students. Shearon begins teaching the first two courses offered as part of the two-year Mechatronics degree, “Circuit Analysis” and “Introduction to Automation,” on Sept. 16. SVHS Students Earn Certifications
Eight students at Southern Vance High School have earned certification from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). The students include Jan Aldana, Christopher Domigez, Courtney Elliott, Elton Marrow, Shaleyah Mitchell, Saul Santillan, Sheldon Smith and Michael Thomas. The NCCER certification modules are offered through the Career and Technical Education Program course entitled CORE and sustainable construction. The instructor for the course is Ben Arrington. Oxford Preparatory Demonstrates Positive Academic Results in First Year
Testing results have been released for schools across the state and it appears that Oxford Preparatory High School has established a comfortable baseline in its initial operating year. VGCC celebrates 45th Anniversary
Vance-Granville Community College students, faculty and staff held a 45th anniversary party on Sept. 4, in the student lounge on the college’s Main Campus. The original charter for the college, then known as Vance County Technical Institute, was issued by the State Board of Education on Sept. 4, 1969, following authorization by the N.C. General Assembly earlier that year. As recordings of some of the most popular music of 1969 played in the background, members of the college community enjoyed …
VGCC names new head of Bioprocess Technology program
Vance-Granville Community College recently named Dr. Tara Rutledge Hamilton as the new head of the college’s Bioprocess Technology program. Hamilton, who lives in Raleigh, has been a member of the VGCC faculty since 2010 and has taught Bioprocess, Biology and Chemistry courses as well as the BioWork training program. Hamilton earned her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Old Dominion University. She later completed a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky. VGCC Library recognizes student artist
Vance-Granville Community College recently recognized a student for his artwork celebrating the college’s library. The VGCC Library Services Subcommittee, which includes faculty and staff members from across the college, honored Wiley Davis of Henderson, whose original artwork was selected as the winner of the subcommittee’s 2014 National Library Week poster contest. The subcommittee sponsored the contest to celebrate the importance of libraries and to raise awareness among students of the services and resources available to them, according to English instructor …

Southern Vance High School’s Kendra Simmons is a four-year starter on the volleyball team, a captain on the cheerleading squad and a starter on the softball team. “Home Grown” eBook Pilot Project Brings 1,200 New eBooks to VGCC Library Patrons
The Vance-Granville Community College Library and NC LIVE, North Carolina’s statewide public and academic library consortium, are experimenting with a new eBook project that gives North Carolina library patrons unlimited access to more than 1,200 eBook titles from North Carolina-based publishers. This collection offers a wide range of content, including novels by popular North Carolina authors, poetry, short stories, and non-fiction. Gill retires after three decades leading VGCC Child Care Center
Denise B. Gill of Henderson recently retired as manager of the Child Care Center at Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus. She had directed the day care center since Sept. 19, 1983. In August, Gill’s colleagues held a reception in her honor, which was attended by numerous VGCC faculty and staff, as well as parents of children who have spent some of their formative years at the center.
