Vance County Public Schools – Breakfast and Lunch Provided to All Students
Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, all students in Vance County Public Schools will be able to eat breakfast and lunch for free each school day. Students will still need to key in a (new) Meal ID number as they enter the cafeteria meal line. Snacks will be available for purchase. Money can still be placed on meal accounts. Union Bank establishes VGCC Scholarship honoring Stan Fox
Oxford-based Union Bank has established a new scholarship at Vance-Granville Community College in honor of a longtime community leader who has been instrumental in the success of both the bank and the college. Stanley H. “Stan” Fox of Oxford, a former state legislator, director emeritus on the bank’s board and current vice-chair of the VGCC Board of Trustees, will be recognized through the endowed scholarship, known as the “Union Bank/Stanley H. VGCC Names 310 to Dean’s List
Vance-Granville Community College has announced that 310 students earned Dean’s List honors for the spring semester that ended in May. To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student had to maintain a 3.5 grade-point average and have no grade lower than “B” while carrying at least 12 semester hours, according to VGCC Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs Dr. Angela Ballentine. VGCC Education Students complete afterschool training
Several Vance-Granville Community College students recently completed special training for afterschool program administrators and staff members. VGCC School-Age Education program head Jacquelin Heath incorporated the “Upping Your After School Game” course content into a curriculum course, School-Age Program Administration (EDU 263), this summer. High School students explore health and science at VGCC
A group of 21 high school students from across the region attended the 2014 Mini-Medical School, organized by the Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with Vance-Granville Community College. The camp was held in June at VGCC’s South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor. This was the college’s first time hosting a Mini-Medical School, which is an intensive, week-long day camp that uses computational science (computer simulation) and hands-on activities to study key aspects of medicine. Longest-serving Trustee Frazier reappointed to VGCC board
A tuition rate increase, the reorganization of computer curriculum programs and the reappointment of a longtime trustee were among the highlights of the Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, July 21. Pending resolution by the North Carolina General Assembly, the per-credit-hour charge for in-state students enrolling in curriculum programs has increased by 50 cents to $72, according to a report from Steven Graham, VGCC’s vice president of finance and operations. VGCC South Campus hosts Tax Seminar for Nonprofits
The Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Revenue, will present a free seminar about sales tax refunds for nonprofit organizations on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the college’s South Campus (1547 South Campus Drive, Creedmoor). VGCC and Chamberlain College of Nursing establish transfer agreement
Vance-Granville Community College and Chamberlain College of Nursing recently formed a partnership that will help graduates of VGCC’s Associate Degree Nursing program transition to complete a bachelor’s degree in Nursing through distance education. The VGCC Board of Trustees officially approved the agreement with Chamberlain at its July 21 meeting. June Dunham, a healthcare development specialist from Chamberlain, visited VGCC’s Main Campus earlier this year to inform students about the new partnership. Work-Based Learning program connects VGCC students with employers
The name is new, but Vance-Granville Community College’s Work-Based Learning program continues a longstanding practice of helping students gain the on-the-job experience they need to complement their classroom studies. The North Carolina Community College System recently changed the name of the Cooperative Education (or “Co-op”) Work Experience program to “Work-Based Learning” (WBL). ‘Plus 50’ students receive inspiration and information at VGCC
Local adults, aged 50 and over, recently received encouragement and advice about pursuing higher education at a special Vance-Granville Community College workshop. The event, held July 16 in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus, was entitled “Over 50 and Going Back to School, What a Great Idea!” and was attended by approximately 65 people. VGCC launches Mechatronics program in August at South Campus
Vance-Granville Community College is introducing a new curriculum program that will provide training needed for highly-skilled jobs in advanced manufacturing. The new program of study is called “Mechatronics Engineering Technology” and, as the name implies, it combines mechanical engineering and electronics. Changes to High School Equivalency program include reduced testing fees
Vance-Granville Community College is spreading the word about changes in the program that allows area adults to take a set of tests to earn the equivalent of a high school diploma. Recently, the name “High School Equivalency” (HSE) replaced the program’s former name: General Educational Development, or GED ® — a registered trademark of the national testing company, Pearson VUE. Natural Horsemanship program starting at VGCC Warren Campus
Vance-Granville Community College is introducing a new Horsemanship program, which will be based at the college’s Warren County Campus, and will provide the education and training for an individual to seek employment associated with the horse industry. The Comprehensive Natural Horsemanship Program will consist of four courses offered by VGCC’s Occupational Extension department, with the first course starting Aug. 14 and continuing through Nov. 22. Vance County Schools – Summer Technology Work
Personnel in the Technology Department of Vance County Schools are busy this summer preparing over 2,800 laptop computers for high school students and teachers to use during the 2014-2015 school year which begins on August 25.
