VGCC Scholarship honors longtime educator Sue Grissom
Students who want to continue their education at Vance-Granville Community College now have another means of support, in the form of a scholarship that honors one of the college’s retired educators. The new scholarship fund has been established by Lelia Brigham of Henderson in honor of Sue Wooten Grissom of Creedmoor, who retired in 2012 as Director of Basic Skills for VGCC. New VGCC scholarship honors Maria Parham Guild Gift Gallery coordinator Ann Rose Allen
Volunteers from the Guild Gift Gallery at Maria Parham Medical Center recently presented $25,000 to the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund that will create a new scholarship. This scholarship — the seventh established by the Guild Gift Gallery in recent years — honors the original volunteer coordinator of the hospital gift shop, Ann Rose Allen of Henderson. Healthcare training courses scheduled at VGCC Warren Campus
Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled several occupational healthcare courses to start in August at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton. The Medication Aide course is set to be held Monday-Thursday, Aug. 11-19, each evening from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. Michelle Bugg will serve as the instructor. VGCC Science Camp offers unique experiences for Middle School Students
This summer, Vance-Granville Community College’s fourth annual Science Camp gave local middle school students numerous opportunities not only to “learn” science, but to “do” science. A total of 32 students, including rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders from Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties, completed the day camp, which was held June 16-20 at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. A pair of Vance-Granville Community College students will receive scholarships worth $2,500 each during the 2014-15 academic year, thanks to contributions from J.P. Taylor Company, L.L.C., a subsidiary of Universal Leaf North America, U.S., Inc. In awarding the J.P. Taylor Company annual scholarship, priority will be given to students who are employees of the company, spouses and children of employees, as well as those enrolled in the College Transfer, Business Administration, Electronics Engineering Technology or Computer Information Technology programs. VGCC Students Awarded Golden LEAF Scholarships
A group of students from Vance-Granville Community College recently received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholars program for the North Carolina Community College System. The scholarship program, designed to help North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The scholarship can be used for tuition, books, fees, supplies, transportation and childcare related to attending classes during the 2013-14 academic year, and industry-recognized credential testing expenses that address skill gaps upon …
VGCC offers CDL-B driver training course
Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) course at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Classes will be held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Aug. 2 through Oct. 11. This course prepares North Carolina residents for jobs operating a variety of commercial vehicles, such as delivery trucks, dump trucks, cement trucks, passenger buses and utility trucks. Vance County School Media Centers Open For Summer
All of the school media centers, with the exception of Clarke Elementary School, are open this summer each Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for students to have summer reading materials and for book check outs. We urge all students and their parents or guardians to visit our school media centers during this summer. We want students to continue to read and improve their reading skills. VGCC Music Scholarship endowed in memory of Dale Ramsey
Vance-Granville Community College students with a passion for music will in the future receive scholarships bearing the name of the late Dale Weatherington Ramsey of Henderson, who died in May. Ramsey worked for many years as the office manager at Century 21 Hancock Properties in Oxford. The firm’s owner, Wills Hancock of Oxford, and other friends of Ramsey have established the new VGCC scholarship in her memory, called the Dale W. VGCC School-Age Education students volunteer in Vance County schools
Students from Vance-Granville Community College recently volunteered as proctors for end-of-grade (EOG) testing in Vance County elementary and middle schools. More than 30 students and alumni served as proctors at Dabney Elementary, Pinkston Street Elementary, New Hope Elementary, Carver Elementary, Eaton-Johnson Middle and Henderson Middle schools. Most were students in the School-Age Education program at the college.
