High School Students study Biotech at VGCC Workshop
Four local high school students participated in the second annual Vance-Granville Community College Biotech Workshop, held over the course of two Saturdays, March 22 and March 29. VGCC Bioprocess Technology program head Dr. Danny Monroe conducted the workshop. The participating students hailed from J. F. Webb School of Health and Life Sciences and Northern Vance High School. VGCC to hold 30th Benefit Golf Tournament on May 6
The 30th annual Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament will be held at the Henderson Country Club on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. All event proceeds support the mission of the college, the Endowment Fund and student scholarships. VGCC names new Pharmacy Technology program head
Dr. Erica Fleming of Creedmoor was recently named program head for the Pharmacy Technology program at Vance-Granville Community College. Born in England and raised on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, Fleming started her career performing pharmacy technician and patient education duties at a hospital and a retail pharmacy. She came to the United States to attend the Howard University College of Pharmacy in Washington, D.C. Fleming graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree in 2003, completed a post-doctoral fellowship …
VGCC invites middle schoolers to Science Camp
Vance-Granville Community College will offer its fourth annual Science Camp for middle school students this summer. The Science Camp will be held June 16-20, 2014, on the college’s Main Campus in Henderson. Young people preparing to enter grades 6 through 8 are invited to participate in the week-long camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Vance-Granville Community College welcomed a special guest to a recent professional development workshop for local afterschool program administrators and staff members. Del Ruff, director of the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Programs (NC CAP), visited VGCC’s Main Campus on March 8 during the daylong “Upping Your Afterschool Game” training session. Young artists showcased at VGCC Child Care Center
The Child Care Center at Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus held an Art Show on March 21. Approximately 150 works of art created by 37 artists (who ranged in age from one to five years old) were displayed. The children used a variety of techniques, including finger painting, watercolors, collages and flowers made with hand-prints and foot-prints, as well as marble painting, in which marbles covered in paint are rolled from side to side on paper, and squirt bottle painting. …

Trustees Approve Total Request of $2.4 Million from Four Counties
Vance-Granville Community College’s Board of Trustees has approved a proposed total budget request of $2,491,302 for 2014-2015 for Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties. The budget request, which includes $2,385,342 in current expenses and $105,960 in capital outlay, was presented to the trustees in their regular bimonthly meeting, held at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford on Monday, March 17. The action came as the board also welcomed N. Annette P. Myers of Oxford as a newly appointed trustee. …

The Vance-Granville Community College Cosmetology competition, an annual tradition generally involving only VGCC students, is expanding. At this year’s event, to be held Tuesday, April 1, Cosmetology students from Halifax Community College and Piedmont Community College have been invited to compete along with students from VGCC’s Main, South and Franklin County Campuses. Women at VGCC get tips on professional appearance and health
Women enrolled at Vance-Granville Community College recently had a unique opportunity to receive professional advice on looking their best and improving their physical fitness.
