VGCC names new Dean of Students
George A. Henderson was recently named Dean of Students at Vance-Granville Community College. Henderson, a resident of Wake Forest, has worked in various capacities for the college since 1998 and most recently served as dean of VGCC’s Warren County Campus. In his new leadership role, Henderson oversees an array of student support services, including counseling, advising, tutoring, mentoring, career services, and the Workforce Investment Act. VGCC Advisory Committees hold annual meetings
Citizens from Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties came together at the Main Campus of Vance-Granville Community College on Oct. 29 as the college’s advisory committees held their annual meetings. VGCC’s 38 advisory committees are made up of people from the communities served by the college who have worked in the fields for which the college offers training. $4.7 Million Grant Will Support Professional Development for North Carolina Principals
Strong professional development for principals has received a big boost in the northeastern part of the state thanks to a grant awarded to North Carolina State University. VGCC names Blaine to direct Occupational Extension training
Vance-Granville Community College recently named Jean A. Blaine of Durham as the college’s new Director of Occupational Extension. Blaine has been a member of the VGCC staff since 2007 and most recently served as Director of Prison Programs. In her new role, Blaine supervises the coordinators for Occupational Healthcare and Prison Programs. Vance-Granville Community College will offer a new, more flexible format for preparing students for information technology careers when the spring 2014 semester begins on Jan. 13. Newton sworn in as first VGCC Police Chief
Sean G. Newton took the oath of office on Oct. 28 as the first Chief of Police for the new campus police department at Vance-Granville Community College. The ceremonial swearing-in, administered by North Carolina District Court Judge Randolph Baskerville, was held in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County. Comedy “I Hate Hamlet” to be staged by VGCC Drama students
Vance-Granville Community College Drama students will present a production of Paul Rudnick’s comedy, “I Hate Hamlet,” on campus, November 21-24. Performances begin on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m.; and on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. All performances are in the small auditorium in Building 2 on the college’s Main Campus in Henderson. VGCC offers Hand-Stamped Jewelry class
Just in time for the holiday season, Vance-Granville Community College will offer a two-hour class that provides opportunities for crafting unique, personalized gifts. The “Hand-Stamped Jewelry” class is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. until noon on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Vance County Schools – Bus Driver Training Announcement
Vance County Schools is hosting bus driver training sessions November 18-20 in the Drama Room at Southern Vance High School. The sessions will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. All interested persons are urged to pre-register for the training sessions by contacting the Vance County Schools’ Transportation Department at 438-5012. Participants must pre-register by November 1. To receive certification as a bus driver, participants must attend all three days of the training.

Vance-Granville Community College helped local students explore technical career fields on Oct. 15 by holding an “Applied Technologies Expo” in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Vance-Granville Community College will hold a series of sessions offering information for high school students and their parents on the “Career and College Promise” (CCP) program. VGCC receives Back-to-Work Grant
Vance-Granville Community College was recently awarded $120,000 by the State Board of Community Colleges to implement the North Carolina Back-to-Work program established last year by the N.C. General Assembly. VGCC was one of 49 of the state’s 58 community colleges receiving a total of $5,874,104 in such grants this year, with amounts ranging from $52,600 to $173,870.
