Vance County Schools Closed Tuesday
All Vance County Schools will be closed again for all students and school system employees on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, due to continuing snowy conditions that make travel risky. The make-up days for the two school days missed are already scheduled in our school year calendar for February 15 and June 9.
City & County Meetings Cancelled
The City of Henderson’s City Council meeting for Monday 1/9/17 has been cancelled. A date has not yet been set for a replacement meeting. The Vance County Board of Commissioners meeting for Monday 1/9/17 has been cancelled. The new date has been scheduled for Wednesday January 11th at 6pm. The Vance County Board of Education meeting for Monday 1/9/17 has been cancelled. A date has not yet been set for a replacement meeting.
Oxford Preparatory School Readies for 2017/2018 Enrollment
Applications for new 7th – 12th grade student enrollments for the 2017 – 2018 school year are available at oxfordprep.org and available in the school office. VGCC graduates 14 cadets in school’s 103rd BLET Class
Fourteen cadets graduated on Dec. 13 from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program at Vance-Granville Community College, in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. After passing the state certification exam, all are authorized to work in any law enforcement agency in North Carolina. Henderson Furniture Outlet Donates to Henderson Middle School

VGCC hosted College Day
Vance-Granville Community College hosted admissions officers from four-year colleges and universities on Dec. 8 on VGCC’s Main Campus. The event was VGCC’s annual “College Day,” which allows students to obtain important information about transfer requirements, financial aid and scholarships that can help them take the next steps in their educational journeys. VGCC Bioprocess program moving to Franklin Campus
The Vance-Granville Community College Bioprocess Technology degree program will be based at the college’s Franklin County Campus, starting in January 2017. The program has been located at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County since its inception in January 2006. The biotechnology lab on Main Campus will now be used primarily by the new Histotechnology degree program instead. VGCC programs receive high national rankings
Three national organizations recently recognized Vance-Granville Community College with high rankings for high-quality, affordable education, offered online or on-campus. The Community for Accredited Online Schools (AccreditedSchoolsOnline.org), a leading resource for higher education and college accreditation information, recently released its national rankings for the 2016-2017 school year. The organization ranked VGCC as having the nation’s 34th Best Pharmacy Technician program as well as the nation’s 49th Best Beauty/Cosmetology program. VGCC Career & College Promise program offers free classes for high school students
High school students throughout the region can now register for spring semester classes at Vance-Granville Community College offered through the “Career and College Promise” (CCP) program. CCP allows eligible students to pursue a college degree, diploma or certificate while still in high school, without having to pay college tuition. The spring semester begins Jan. 9, 2017. The STEM Early High School in Vance County Schools hosted its second annual Spanish Spelling Bee on November 9, with a student from Henderson Middle School taking top honors. Vance County Schools Receive New Laptops
The deployment of almost 600 new laptop computers to teachers in Vance County Schools began October 18th, with teachers from six schools coming to the Administrative Services Center in the afternoon to get their new devices. The teachers were returning their old devices and then picking up new ones, which are Lenovo E460 laptops, that have been fully programmed and equipped to use as teaching tools each day in their classrooms. Vance-Granville Community College is holding events at all four of its campuses to offer free help to local high school seniors and their families with applying for financial aid. Information technology training courses are set to be offered soon at Vance-Granville Community College, and grant funding from the new NC TechHire program can help eligible area residents pay for them. These courses are offered in a “hybrid” format, with some coursework online and some on VGCC’s Main Campus. Chamber Ribbon Cutting – Carver Elementary School
A ribbon cutting was held on Friday, September 30th for Carver Elementary School as they celebrated their new multipurpose room was officially dedicated in memory of Eddie Wright, the late Vance County Board of Commissioners’ member who proved to be the school’s biggest advocate in getting the facility constructed.
