Volunteers from the Guild Gift Gallery at Maria Parham Medical Center recently presented $25,000 to the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund that will create a new scholarship. This scholarship — the seventh established by the Guild Gift Gallery in recent years — honors the original volunteer coordinator of the hospital gift shop, Ann Rose Allen of Henderson. NC Quick Pass Customers Receiving Fraudulent Emails Regarding Toll Collection
RALEIGH — NC Quick Pass and the Turnpike Authority want to make customers aware that residents in several states, including North Carolina, have reported receiving fraudulent emails stating that they must pay an outstanding toll balance. These emails include a link directing customers to an invoice or payment portal. Tobacco growers approve assessment
RALEIGH — North Carolina growers of flue-cured tobacco have approved an assessment that will support the Tobacco Growers Association of North Carolina’s efforts to promote the interests of its farmers. The assessment was approved on 88 percent of ballots in a mail-in referendum. A two-thirds majority was needed for approval. Growers approved an assessment of up to 15 cents per hundred pounds of flue-cured tobacco sold in North Carolina. However, the initial assessment will be 10 cents per hundred pounds. …

Police Department Investigating Gunshot Wound on Deceased
On Sunday, July 13, 2014, members of the Henderson Police Department responded to 2342 Oxford Road, Henderson in response to a deceased individual. Officers found Tommy Lee Key, 70 of the address deceased. Key was found to be suffering from a single gunshot wound. The matter has been turned over to the Henderson Police Department Criminal Investigation Division. Foul play is not suspected in this matter.

Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled several occupational healthcare courses to start in August at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton. The Medication Aide course is set to be held Monday-Thursday, Aug. 11-19, each evening from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. Michelle Bugg will serve as the instructor. This summer, Vance-Granville Community College’s fourth annual Science Camp gave local middle school students numerous opportunities not only to “learn” science, but to “do” science.
