Vance-Granville Community College recently organized a clothing drive to benefit the patients at Murdoch Developmental Center, located in Butner. The college’s Sustainability Outreach Subcommittee collected gently used clothes and shoes for both children and adults this spring, and received donations from faculty, staff and students. Geraldine Cash, the administrative assistant for VGCC’s South Campus and chair of the subcommittee, presented the donations to officials from Murdoch Developmental Center in May. “We collected approximately 20 boxes full of clothing,” Cash said. …

High school students from throughout the region are invited to learn about health sciences and careers in medicine by participating in the 2015 “Mini-Medical School” Summer Camp, conducted by the Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with Vance-Granville Community College. The intensive, week-long day camp is being offered twice: June 22-26, at VGCC’s South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor, and July 27-31, at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus, just outside Louisburg. Students in Vance County Schools are already involved in state testing that will now stretch through the end of the school year with the last day of classes set for Wednesday, June 10 2015. The Early College High School has been administering state end-of-course and end-of-the-semester exams throughout this week. Sixteen cadets graduated on May 12 from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program at Vance-Granville Community College, in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. After passing the state certification exam, all are authorized to work in any law enforcement agency in North Carolina. Vance-Granville Community College’s commencement exercises on May 15 awarded a record 574 degrees and diplomas, according to an announcement Monday night from VGCC President Dr. Stelfanie Williams. Dr. Williams made the report to the VGCC Board of Trustees at the board’s bi-monthly meeting at the main campus on May 18. She noted that the registrar is still processing graduates as well as grade changes and expects additional completions. Vance-Granville Community College will soon begin a certificate program that provides students with the skills and knowledge to succeed as a Health Unit Secretary. The course is scheduled to be held Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., June 1 through July 23, in room 7335 on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County.
