Troxler announces continued funding for hemlock restoration
RALEIGH – Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler today announced additional funding for efforts to restore North Carolina’s hemlock trees to long-term health. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will use $250,000 from the state’s legal settlement with the Tennessee Valley Authority to continue supporting the Hemlock Restoration Initiative, which began last year. Over the next three years, the investment will support direct interventions on state and private lands, coordination of resources, and increasing volunteer efforts to save hemlock stands …

2015 N.C. boll weevil assessment remains at $1 per acre
RALEIGH — The board of the Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation of North Carolina has set the 2015 boll weevil assessment at $1 per acre of cotton, keeping the fee the same as in 2014. The fee supports the foundation’s efforts to monitor cotton acreage in North Carolina for any re-introduction of the boll weevil and to respond promptly with eradication treatments if necessary. “Cotton producers had a strong year in 2014, with record yields of 1,049 pounds per acre. Devonjee Branch In Federal Custody
On Thursday, February 5, 2015, Devonjee Branch was taken into custody on these federal charges by officers of the Louisburg, N.C. police department. Branch surrendered himself to authorities late yesterday evening. Branch will be held in the Franklin County Jail without privilege of bond pending transfer of custody to the United States Marshall Service. Heroin Trafficking Charges Filed
On Thursday, February 5, 2015, members of the Henderson Police Department Special Operations Unit arrested two individuals on heroin trafficking related charges. Marselle Rasheed Johnson, 27, 733 Old Baker Street, Oxford was charged with the following offenses: Trafficking heroin by transport; Trafficking heroin by possession; and Manufacturing heroin. RALEIGH — For the past 14 months, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has provided salvage yards and secondary metal recyclers operating across the state access to the North Carolina Scrap Vehicle Reporting System. Signed into law via House Bill 26 and effective December 1, 2013, the system mandates that salvage yard owners and metal recyclers verify all identification information on vehicles 10 model years or older that were sold without a title. Cynthia W. Young of Oxford recently became the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Vance-Granville Community College. She previously served as an instructor for VGCC’s Human Services Technology program. Over Two-Thirds of North Carolina Public Schools Receive C or Better on School Performance Grades for 2013-14
North Carolina’s first School Performance Grades are out, and 65.4 percent of elementary and middle schools earned a grade of C or better. For high schools, which have additional indicators of career and college readiness included in their grade, 88.8 percent earned a grade of C or better.
