Tuesday’s open line
It is my sincere hope that the taxpayers of Henderson do not get stuck with the tab for cleaning up the Beacon Light mess. I trust I am not alone in this. With that, we give you the open line.
Friday/weekend open line
The 14th Annual Crime Stoppers Award & Recognition Banquet was a portrait of a community unified behind a goal that transcends ethnicity, gender, economic status, and all of the other excuses people use to segregate themselves from other people. For those who say that Henderson is divided and divisive, I give you yesterday’s study in unity of purpose. Here’s your open line.
Elissa Yount: Plenty good room
All those years I taught English, my students kept journals–some unforgettable.
Wednesday’s open line
What can I say about yesterday’s joint city/county meeting..? The cheeseburger I had was pretty good. Here’s your open line.
Monday’s open line
I, for one, thought that the Candidates’ Forum yesterday afternoon went very well. I’d solicit comments from readers asking for criticisms and comments but, frankly, you’re going to offer them whether I want them or not. Here’s your open line.
Elissa Yount: Lead, don’t be led
Special to Home in Henderson If you are like me, you remember many people in your life who taught you.
Elissa Yount: Time for a course correction
Before the last city election, on a September Sunday morning in church, a prominent local businessman came up to me and said, “Elissa, I do not like the direction you have taken the city in and I want you to know that I am voting against you for that reason.”

To the editor: Help badly needed in Henderson
Editor’s Note: Some portions have been omitted or paraphrased. The omitted portions are represented by three periods (…) and the paraphrased portions are in brackets ([…]). I am writing because I am very concerned about some things that I know are going on in Henderson.
Patriot Day/weekend open line
I just had to explain to my nine year old what Patriot Day commemorates, and I realized while doing it that the emotions I felt at the time are still there, under the surface. I despise the events of that day, but I regret even more that the unity we Americans felt as a people in the days and months that followed did not endure. We give you a somewhat somber open line.
Wednesday’s open line
Our feeling here in the HiH press room is that voter apathy is at an all-time high (or low, depending on how you view these things). Is that just us, or have you indeed stopped caring? Let us know your thoughts on today’s open line.

Thursday’s open line
The great science fiction writer Roger Zelazny once wrote that any bureaucracy that is allowed to exist long enough inevitably becomes a parody of its own function. He should know. He worked for the Social Security Administration until he could publish enough to feed his family. Case and point: The state of North Carolina allots entities money and then makes them send it back so that the funds can show up as a revenue stream on a balance sheet. If …
Elissa Yount: Cooking up a storm
When most people think of Section 8 housing in Henderson, they lump all money that is spent on assisted living into one pot.
Thursday’s open line
We were relieved to see that our friends over at The Daily Dispatch changed their web hosting. We were missing a lot of news. We are also quite surprised to see that they have entered the world of blogging by allowing readers to comment on news articles. Two news blogs in one town? Who says Henderson isn’t progressive? Here’s your open line.
Elissa Yount: Let’s look at race
There are so many rumors and so much misinformation flying around town, and a lot of it deals with race.
Tuesday’s open line
Well, the dreaded first day of school is here. Wake ’em up and send then into the loving arms of this year’s teacher cadre. Like I tell my kids, it could be worse. They could be cutting bananas in the hot sun. Learning is a luxury.
Elissa Yount special: The Embassy turn-down
