Rep. Etheridge statement on Jesse Helms
“Senator Helms dedicated his life to serving the people of North Carolina. Whether people agreed or disagreed with him, Senator Helms would always let his constituents know where he stood on the important issues of the day. My condolences go out to his family, his wife, his children and his grandchildren,” said U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington).
To the editor: City silent on Embassy grant questions
On July Fourth it is important that we remember our rights as well as our responsibilities as citizens in a democracy.

We’re fascinated by the idea of a peanut-free school. We’re also wondering if we can throw in wheat gluten, milk/lactose, bee/wasp stings, citrus, penicillin, tomatoes, and shellfish. Also, if we could make the school kosher, halal, and vegan, that would probably save some time as well. We could all munch rice cakes and drink soy milk in the cafeteria and lose a lot of weight.

And they said fast food would kill you young. Thank you, Mr. Hardee, for the mushroom & swiss burger. It was a favorite of mine in college after a night of…socializing.

I’ve been spending a piece of my mornings during my post-heart attack summer of luxury at Common Grounds on Dabney Drive enjoying a latte. And, yes, I’m allowed two caffeinated beverages per day, according to the book they gave me at Duke. It’s a good latte. Okay, I’m done shilling. Carry on.

To the editor: letter to top cops
Inspired by some of the comments on the blog about “America’s Toughest Sheriff” Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, AZ and my own disappointing experiences here in Henderson with respect to crime, I’ve written a letter to the Henderson Chief of Police and the Vance County Sheriff, which I am strongly considering sending.

Today is the last day of school for Vance County Schools. It’s always a bittersweet moment for me. Just when I’ve got them trained to do what I want them to do, they up and leave on me. And it gets harder every year.
HiH audio: Eric Williams “non-renewal” 12-05-05
Also featuring documents related to Williams’ “termination” Editor’s Note: We were thinking about writing an article about past council members’ reactions to the $30,000 payout to Eric Williams as the final resolution of his contract as well as for dropping claims of kidnapping, false arrest, and the violation of his constitutional rights.

Is it natural beauty or an oil boom for North Carolina’s coast? History tells us that you can’t have both.

We hear there’s a new flag flying in front of the Henderson Police Department, and we agree that it’s a good thing. Form is content, after all.
Investing in our troops’ futures
A Memorial Day column by U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge As we welcome summer this Memorial Day weekend with beach trips and barbecues, I ask all North Carolinians to take a moment to remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice during our nation’s history.

News flash: Exercise can improve student performance. Is there anyone who’s willing to admit that they didn’t know that physical activity is good for children? Talk about re-inventing the wheel…

Here’s a thought: Henderson invests heavily in wind farming and offers heavily discounted electricity to residents and businesses in the city limits. Might that expand the tax base?

This year’s state budget revisions include an average 6.9% raise for teachers. In the past, the word “average” has translated to mean “big increases for years 0-3 of the salary schedule and beans for everyone else, since they’re too ruined to change professions by now”. Forgive our cynicism.

Mr. Samuel Crosson was the head custodian at Henderson Middle School during my tenure there. He was a good and decent man. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family as well as the family of Mr. Alvin Currin who are left to try to make sense of it all.

North Carolinians not getting their money’s worth from higher education? We can’t all have gone into teaching.
