We sadly say goodbye to David Carradine. We will remember him fondly from his character in Kung Fu, and Kill Bill Vol. I and Kill Bill Vol. II. Most of all, we will remember him for his role as Frankenstein in Deathrace 2000, one of the many bad, bad movies that made me into the warped editor I am today.
Blood drive at Maria Parham Medical Center
Maria Parham Medical Center and the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Friday, June 5, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the classroom and the auditorium of the hospital.
“Cops on Top” Friday, June 12
U P D A T E D Editor’s Note: This event was moved back one week due to anticipated bad weather. On Friday, June 12, 2009, from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., law enforcement officers in Vance County will sit atop Chick-fil-A in Henderson to raise money for the North Carolina Special Olympics.

Kudos to the Vance County Board of Commissioners for passing a resolution asking the U.S. Congress to extend veteran’s benefits to merchant marines who served during World War II. My grandfather was in the Navy during the war, but he served on a merchant ship and told frequent stories of the dangers he and his crewmates faced in the south Pacific. He told me once he shot down a kamikaze, but he was prone to exaggeration…

County HR committee to meet
The Vance County Board of Commissioners’ Human Resources Committee is scheduled to meet Monday, June 1, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in the office of County Manager Jerry Ayscue. Ayscue’s office is located at 122 Young Street in Henderson. No agenda was given for the meeting.
Friday/weekend open line
Information coming from the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) suggests that a 10% cut in salary for state employees, including teachers, is on the table. I assume that if World War III starts sometimes soon that I won’t really care. If it doesn’t, I’ll just have to cut some more family members from the household budget. Here’s your open line.

Henderson City Manager Ray Griffin indicated at Tuesday’s budget meeting that he did not know if the ABC formula could be renegotiated with Vance County. If anyone knows how this relationship could be changed, please let us know on today’s open line. (P.S. – These days, I’m thinking that the ABC Store is the real teacher’s store.)
