Donate blood, win Big Apple trip
Take a Bite of the Big Apple as Part of the American Red Cross “New York Get Away” Promotion Few places hold the cultural and historic significance of New York City, and now, as part of the American Red Cross “New York Getaway” promotion, one lucky blood donor from The American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region will have an opportunity to experience the Big Apple first-hand just by giving blood or platelets between April 1 and April 30.
Tuesday’s open line
A long-time reader wrote to us yesterday. He was struck by a comment post made on the April 8 Open line, specifically #24: “Number #8 you sound like a sheep.” Unbeknown to us, the reference is to an essay by Lt. Col. David Grossman, On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs. We think you’ll find his ideas on the social stratification of violence interesting, and we give them to you for debate on the open line.
From the HPD: Protecting Yourself
The following is from a series of tips on safety from Lt. I.W. Robinson, Jr. with the Henderson Police Department:

Thursday’s open line
We’d like to move a specific discussion that’s been taking place to a more general one. Pretending that I’m not already a teacher and therefore already held to a higher standard of behavior, am I, as the spouse of a law enforcement officer, held to a higher standard than that of an average citizen by virtue of my spouse’s profession? And if I do not adhere to that standard, is she liable for my behavior? Feel free to discuss this …
Wednesday’s open line
We’d be lying if we didn’t say that we weren’t looking forward to spring break with anything short of eagerness. At least we have something to look forward to, even if we’re going to spend the week working on our taxes. Many here in our hometown have nothing at all to anticipate, especially our elementary school students who get report cards today. Consider that on today’s open line.
Tuesday’s open line
Here’s an article from the Raleigh News & Observer sent to us by a long-time reader we thought was of interest. It makes the bold claim that arts education and creative thinking is lacking is the North Carolina high school curriculum. What! Children do not live by the three R’s alone? Go light, heretics, go light…

Monday’s open line
I find the metaphor of HiH as a Petri dish somewhat engaging. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin when he accidently left a dish uncovered for a few days, and the benefits of that piece of serendipity to humanity are without measure. Who knows what felicity will sprout out of the muck today? Add your spores on today’s open line.
A note on Dispatch article posting
Folks, since the Daily Dispatch is going to an on-line pay format soon, it is no longer appropriate to re-post articles from their Web site onto Home in Henderson. In any event, we’d like to thank the good folks at the Dispatch for the front page exposure this morning. Remember, it’s all good publicity as long as they spell your name right.
