Kudos to the HPD on their recent series of high-profile arrests. Besides taking the opportunity to congratulate the police, who often feel like they’re trying to bail out the Atlantic with a thimble, what else can we do to take ownership of our town from criminals who dare to raise a hand to our hardworking and seniors? Let your ideas flow on today’s open line.

As far as the time change goes, it’s “spring ahead; fall back”, so don’t forget to set the clocks forward an hour before you go to sleep on Saturday night. There are various fixes that we all need for our computers, thanks to the new time-change laws. We found this site particularly useful for Windows users: Microsoft.com: Preparing for Daylight Saving Time changes in 2007. It takes a bit of study to determine exactly what you need for your configuration, …

This story about Bert Brady, ABC News’ Person of the Week was forwarded to us yesterday by a long-time reader. Our reader also wrote, and we quote, “If Henderson folks could only come together on a project, any project, like this….” The story, as well as our reader’s words, moved us, so we offer them to you on today’s open line.

Perhaps every teacher in Vance County should take advantage of the Five County Mental Health Authority‘s stress management program. With nine school weeks left until EOG testing, and with so many students more interested in exploring behavior boundaries than learning anything, we’re still amazed that the expression for snapping one’s cap is still “going postal” rather than “going schoolteacher”. Send us some positive energy on today’s open line.

Pugnacious the Cat A loyal reader wished for me to report that Chicken Little’s cat, Pugnacious, is doing much better. Apparently, the croup he had has improved. The warm towels around his neck did the trick. (I dunno if it’s news, but what the hell.) For everyone else, here’s the open line.

Although details are still emerging, it looks as if Vance County won’t get the new elementary school and/or middle school that seemed like a done deal just a few months ago. According to a key source, a vital piece of property on the proposed site was sold to a third party yesterday, rendering the investments already made in the remainder of the property, like site studies and architectural preliminaries worthless. We’re told that the Vance County government failed to respond …

Let us suppose that the City did pull out of the joint funding arrangements as Henderson City Council member Bobby Gupton suggests. Would the County step up and pull the load? Should it have to? Or would Aycock Rec, 911, the new library, and all the other joint ventures end up looking like the Armory in an eternity of stalemate? It’s yours to toss around on today’s open line.
