Here’s a little Internet tidbit that’s come in handy for us: it’s called gethuman.com. No, it’s got nothing to do with “Up With People”. It’s a guide for how to get through telephone mazes and speak to a human being when calling a major corporation. We thank one of our favorite long-time readers for the tip. Now that you’ve saved some time on the phone, waste it here on our open line.

Wednesday’s open line
For those who remain skeptical, I encourage you to go to a Boys and Girls Club in Vance County or anywhere and see what I saw yesterday and the day before: a group of children having good, clean, wholesome fun instead of sitting around at home watching thugs grab themselves on television or “hoochie mamas” shake their behinds on music videos. To Vance County Schools, we give kudos and credit where it is due. Without their loan of temporary facilities, …
Tuesday’s open line
We commend County Commissioner Danny Wright for his vote yesterday to give a home to the Boys and Girls Club of North Central North Carolina, Vance County Unit. We ask the others on the Commission to look into their hearts and ask themselves what is best for our children. We find that rarely are the needs of underprivileged youth served by a fat bottom line. We urge the Commission to follow the lead of the City Council and invest in …

Monday’s open line
This is one of those “eclipse days” when the Henderson City Council, the Vance County Commission, and the Vance County Board of Education meet on the same day. It seems to us that in a climate of greater civic interest, these major local governmental bodies would be required to meet on different days. This would allow concerned citizens an opportunity to attend all meetings, and elected officials would have a chance to attend the meetings of the other two bodies. …

Weekend open line
Since this letter to the editor in today’s Daily Dispatch has already captured the interest of our readers, let’s go with it. How can the collection of child support from “deadbeat parents” be streamlined to best serve the interests of children? Give it a think on our weekend open line.
Friday’s open line
I took a few days away from the blog to spend with my family (which, in retrospect, was probably seriously poor timing) when the debate about Henderson Mayor Clem Seifert and his trip to the North Carolina League of Municipalities conference erupted. The debate raises the question of how much scrutiny a part-time city official merits, and where the line should be drawn between the public and private spheres. Let your thoughts on this or any other topic be known …

Call to Boys and Girls Club parents
If you have submitted an application to enroll your child in the Vance County Boys and Girls Club and have not yet been contacted, it is vital that you contact Executive Director Judy Johnson or Unit Director Ron Williams as soon as possible. Details still need to be discussed regarding transportation, who may pick up your child, and other mechanical and safety issues. Club officials may be contacted at 252.430.1871.
Thursday’s open line
Here’s a story brought to our attention by a long-time reader about overcoming life’s adversities that makes the trials and tribulations of our daily lives seem trivial by comparison. Mull it over on today’s open line.

Home for the Holidays
We’re taking the Corner Kitchen in a slightly different direction for the next month. Here’s the place to write about all of the holiday traditions that you’d like to share: edible, decorative, musical, religious, practical, or some category we haven’t thought of yet. Perhaps you’d like to share a story of Christmas cheer, and act of kindness, or a modern miracle. All is welcome in what we hope will become a new Home in Henderson tradition.

HiH Helpline
Because we have so many readers from so many diverse walks of life and areas of expertise, we thought it would be a good idea to pool that knowledge for the good of all. Friday’s open line
We invite readers to view this article in today’s Daily Dispatch on the agreement between the Alan Vester auto group and the NC Attorney General. In a community still suffering the results of the Creative Real Estate scandal, we wonder if consumer credit and finance should be part of our educational curriculum, or if this is just another symptom of the material-gratification-at-any-cost disease to which our culture seems to be prone. You be the judge on today’s open line.
Thursday’s open line
For those who are not aware, the comments that occasionally pop up touting various pharmaceuticals, travel, mobile phones, pornography, and so forth, are called “spam”. It is believed that the term was coined by computer geeks from the Monty Python “Spam Sketch”. When various users presented us with the problem of having their legitimate posts disappear, I put Tech Support onto the problem. The issue was, as it turns out, the spam handler deleting their posts. The resolution of the …
