Asheville Riverfront to get $50 million makeover
Public spending on greenways, road rerouting and other infrastructure upgrades in and around what has become known as Asheville’s River Arts District will reach $50 million in the next six years, municipal staff involved with the projects say. That infusion of public funding into a once-industrial district will be accompanied by about $200 million in private investment. N.C. posts records in lodging indicators in 2014
North Carolina’s lodging industry posted positive growth and hit record levels in all six major indicators in 2014. For the third year in a row, North Carolina room demand for accommodations was at an all-time high. Recent data released by Smith Travel Research (STR) shows that 2014 room demand was up more than 5 percent from 2013 with nearly 33 million room nights sold in the state. There are much more than black bears hidden among the vast old-growth forests and frosty-topped, towering mountains of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. DPAC among top five theatres in U.S.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) has placed in the top five theaters in the U.S., as tracked by multiple industry-leading trade magazines. In their year-end published attendance rankings, Pollstar, Billboard and Venues Today all placed DPAC among the top five venues in the U.S. among reporting venues of its size and type. DPAC’s 2014 calendar year featured 199 events, which drew more than 412,000 guests and saw a record 93 sellouts.

U.S. Figure Skating Championships to feature more competitors, bigger FanFest in Greensboro
Greensboro made a strong showing four years ago as host of the U.S. Figure Skating Championship, with more than 110,000 attending the various skating events. Add to that 26,000 who attended the free FanFest events outside the main arena, and 25,000 others who watched practices and other events on a second rink. The goal this year – the event is Jan. 17-25 in Greensboro – is to at least match those numbers, if not surpass them. That could be helped …
