It’s a time to celebrate one of life’s simple, viscous pleasures — it’s Peanut Butter Lovers Month. The stuff of one of America’s favorite sandwiches, peanut butter was first offered to the public at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. But as we currently know it — with the peanuts roasted and the product churned like butter to be smooth and so the oil won’t separate — peanut butter didn’t appear on grocery shelves until 1922. While we each eat …

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Unilateral Executive Action is Not the Answer

Submitted Article November 24, 2014 NC Elected Officials

Video of the Week:  This week I joined Greta Van Susteren live in studio to discuss comments made by Obamacare architect, Jonathan Gruber, where he referred to the American people as “stupid.” Gruber’s remarks further illuminate the lack of transparency and deception prevalent throughout the formation and rollout of Obamacare. Click here or on the image above to watch my interview.   The president announced he would issue an executive action on immigration. Americans are tired of political games and …

Legislative Update from Senator Burr

Submitted Article November 24, 2014 NC Elected Officials

This week the Senate finally took a vote on the Keystone XL Pipeline after years of stalling. Unfortunately, the legislation did not pass. As an original cosponsor of the bill and supporter of its authorization, it’s inexplicable that Senate Democrats and the President continue to block legislation supported by this Administration’s own State Department and a strong majority of Americans. We know that you, along with Americans all across our nation, want real leadership and a genuine opportunity to build …

White House Weekly Address: Immigration Accountability Executive Action

Submitted Article November 24, 2014 White House

In this week’s address, the President laid out the steps he took this past week to fix our broken immigration system. Enacted within his legal authority, the President’s plan focuses on cracking down on illegal immigration at the border; deporting felons, not families; and accountability through criminal background checks and taxes. These are commonsense steps, but only Congress can finish the job. As the President acts, he’ll continue to work with Congress on a comprehensive, bipartisan bill — like the …

Monday Open Line

Submitted Article November 24, 2014 Open Lines

This month marks the 150th anniversary of absentee ballot voting in the U.S. This measure was introduced during the Civil War to permit Union army soldiers in the field to choose between re-electing Abraham Lincoln or sending his opponent George McClellan to the White House. But on this date in 1896, Vermont became the first state to enshrine in law the concept of voting away from home, though the voter had to be within the state. All that was required …

Attorney General Roy Cooper: Scammers Use Caller ID to Pose as Cops

Submitted Article November 21, 2014 Crime

Caller ID is helpful, but it isn’t foolproof. In fact, tech-savvy scammers can use it to pose as legitimate businesses or even the police to try to fool you. In a scam reported in Rockingham County this week, a business owner got a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS. The caller said she owed back taxes and needed to pay them immediately, similar to other fraudulent calls we’ve warned you about recently. The business owner became suspicious …
