VGCC concludes series of workshops for women

Vance-Granville Community College recently completed a project designed to encourage women to complete a two-year degree at the college and then successfully transfer to a four-year university. The third and final installment of a series of workshops called “An Educated Woman, An Educated Future” was held on May 5 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4435, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) with provisions authored by Congressman G. K. VGCC Pins Largest Class of Nursing Graduates

Vance-Granville Community College recognized a record-high 55 students who graduated this spring from the Associate Degree Nursing program with a pinning ceremony in the college’s Civic Center on May 14. Among those honored with distinctive nursing pins at the ceremonies were seven who graduated through the LPN to ADN Transition Program, which helps Licensed Practical Nurses to continue their education and then become Registered Nurses. AAA expects uptick in holiday travel

This Memorial Day will see the second highest number of travelers on the roads and in the skies since 2000 and the highest since the recession, auto club AAA last Friday. DBAP to host ACC Baseball Championship through 2018

Durham Bulls Athletic Park will host the ACC Baseball Championship from 2015 to 2018, the league and the Durham Bulls announced last Thursday. The baseball championships have been held in Durham eight times previously, with its last appearance in 2013. Last year, the tournament set records for single-game attendance (11,329) and championship game attendance (8,697). The tournament drew 58,454 fans, the fourth-highest total in its history. The 2014 ACC Baseball Championship is being held in Greensboro May 20-25.

VGCC Makes Significant Progress with Sustainability Efforts

Sustainability efforts at Vance-Granville Community College’s four campuses are making an impact, the VGCC Board of Trustees learned at the regular bimonthly meeting on Monday, May 19. Among North Carolina’s 58 community colleges, VGCC ranked ninth best in energy consumption per full-time-equivalent students and 12th per square footage, Steve Graham, the Vice President of Finance and Operations, told the Board. “From 2007-2008 through 2012-2013, Vance-Granville’s energy consumption per-square-foot decreased by 21 percent and water consumption per-square-foot decreased by 18 percent,” …

Vance-Granville Community College will offer a course this summer that provides basic instruction in Programmable Logic Controllers. “Introduction to PLC’s” is scheduled to be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m., June 2 through July 31, on VGCC’s South Campus, located between Creedmoor and Butner. Eleven cadets graduated on May 13 from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program at Vance-Granville Community College, in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. After passing the state certification exam, all are authorized to work in any law enforcement agency in North Carolina. This class boasted a 100-percent passing rate on the state exam. Butterfield Applauds City of Durham Receipt of Grant to Train Unemployed and Under-Employed for Environmental Jobs
