This week in 1955, a small hamburger restaurant opened in Des Plaines, Illinois-the first of what would become one of the world’s best-recognized brand names — McDonald’s. The franchise shop belonged Ray Kroc, whose main interest at the time was selling the machines that mixed milkshakes. Gas prices jump 15 cents in North Carolina

AAA Carolinas says the average price of gas in the state has jumped 15 cents in the last month from $3.38 on March 8 to $3.53 on Tuesday (yesterday). The auto club says North Carolinians are paying the highest price for gas since last July. Oxford License Plate Agency Contract Expires in September

Vance-Granville Community College recently nominated David A. Henry of Macon, a student in the College Transfer program, for the North Carolina Community College System’s Governor Robert W.
