Last week, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released the most detailed bipartisan report to date on the September 11, 2012, terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Congressional Update; My Take on President Obama’s Visit to NC

Submitted Article January 20, 2014 NC Elected Officials

The president came to North Carolina last week to talk about jobs,  and the state of our nation’s economy. As I mentioned in my interview with WRAL this past week, I was taken-aback by the president’s implication that he was responsible for the great things taking place in our state—especially considering that our state’s government is entirely Republican-controlled. The true credit for North Carolina’s improving economic condition should be accredited to Governor McCrory and the Republican-led General Assembly—not the president …

Monday Open Line

It’s purely coincidence, but nonetheless symbolic, that this date, the traditional presidential inauguration day, also happens to be the 231st anniversary of the end of hostilities in the American Revolution. This 1783 cease-fire, while throwing off a monarch, started us on the way to electing our head of state. Along with creating the office of president, the ensuing constitution of the new republic was unique in world history for requiring a regular, periodic census. Letting bygones be bygones, census figures …

North Carolina’s poorest hit by federal cuts: ‘Unless someone helps, we’re bust’

Submitted Article January 17, 2014 News

In February, in an attempt to address a $2bn debt that it owed the federal government, North Carolina passed a law that slashed both the number of weeks for which a job-seeker can receive state benefits and reduced the amount that it pays out in unemployment, from $535 a week to $350. In doing so, North Carolina knowingly violated a contract with the federal government, resulting in the automatic cutting off of federal assistance for the long-term unemployed. The changes, …

Friday / Weekend Open Line

Submitted Article January 17, 2014 Open Lines

There’s been a lot of emphasis lately on making houses that are more energy efficient — with better insulation and windows that seal out heat and cold. Many feature the use of solar panels to capture the natural heat of the sun. The first house in America with solar heating and radiation cooling opened this week in 1955 in Tucson, Arizona. A large, slanting slab of steel and glass converted sunlight into heat, which was ducted into the house. In …
